Someone make Sticky of BOV sounds!
Thursday, July 28, 2005 5:09 PM
Ok I'm still new to what BOV make what sound. Funniest thing is to watch someone try to tell you over the phone what each sound like. So what I'm askin' is if you can post a good vid of your BOV's and what PSI you are running with it. Please help me out. I don't want to be like so many others out there that buy one that isn't happy and want a different one. Thank you if you make this work.

I'm a large fan of 1g DSM BOV's. Cheap and effective, work well up to 26 psi when crushed. Loud. A simple "TSH" sound... a classic. Did I mention cheap?

man... they sound different on every car. its no way to compare... depending on how much boost they get and stuff. ive heard so many opinions. generally, some blow off valves hiss, some go psh/tsh, and some whistle. i think a trumpet bov would be cool... one that went like vrooooom-HONK

just put a duck call in your BOV and call it good

This is so very true, but most here have the same engines that would still be close. I also know that they did sound different on other cars, but you could tell the difference in them once you have heard them. Most turboed car owners can tell by the sound of a BOV what brand it is because it is well known...

yeah I agree... they sound different on every car. I have the turboxs type s on mine and it sounds way different that the one listed.

I donno why people want to pick a blow off valve according to its sound.

I'd rather get a reliable, well built unit with a strong spring, good piston, and some tunability for release. What it sounds like is only secondary in my opinion...

Some of the "great" sounding units on the market only sound good at high boost anyway.

You guys do realize that at 5-7 psi a bov doesn't sound HALF as good as it does at 10-15 psi, and so on and so forth as the PSI goes up.

In fact a BOV sounds pretty weak at 3-6 psi in comparison.

Why do you think I can't turn down the boost? PSSSST!

Most manufacturers have a clip or a description of the sound, but just like mufflers the same unit on two different cars doesn't sound the same.

Well then why do most still pick here exhaust by sound. If someone has to listen to something everytime you shift, or let off the gas I think I would care what it would sound like. Some BOV's are just crapy sounding....

I picked and had my mufflers hand made for flow, not sound. I had no idea what it was going to come out sounding like, because I wanted something that flowed well for my turbo while staying legal.

I'll admit I wanted a blow off valve that went PSSSHT in one release, no chatter. But if I ended up getting a chattering one I really didn't care as long as it worked.

true true but its fair to say that picking a BOV by sound is not a bad practice.
Obviusly you need something that works well but in the end your BOV can really be something thats is used for asthtic value. You mod your car for your enjoyment right. so why not enjoy what it sounds like.

Oh and BTW the supra on that blowoffvalves.com sight might be the most amasing BOV Ive ever heard.

For all of you people worried about the BOV chatter, and those who say that they have it now...... Loosen your BOV!!!!!!!!
That chatter is not the sound of the BOV, but rather compressor surge. The BOV is so tight that you still have some pressure backing up into the compressor wheel. You can tune this sound away and it WILL lengthen the life of the turbo if you do.
NO BLOW OFF VALVE IS DESIGNED TO MAKE THE CHATTER NOISE.
Before you argue this or try to point out one acception or say anything about my post, google search it for FIVE MINUTES so you can agree with me rather than argue. If a BOV is "designed" to make that sound, it is just a BOV designed tighter than others and the sound is still compressor surge in the turbo. Large intercoolers amplify the sound, so do hard charge pipes.
A lot of the people with chatter sounds on veryh high performance cars have no BOV at all because of the increase in throttle response. Of course they have to rebuild turbos every 10k miles AT LEAST because of the excessive bearing and compressor wheel damage.

Continue your day.

what if your BOV is adjusted as loose as possible and it still chatters at low boost (not flooring it)

Well now I can understand why this hasn't happened. Just cause someone would ask if others would post some vids of some Boosted J's with BOV's on there car starts a mess of things. If anyone here has some please post them. I'm sure we all understand that they will sound different on each car, and also that some just don't buy for sound and others do. So please anyone that would like to help out do. Otherwise save your breath for the newbies fourm. You will will need it there, not here.

those are usually the people who arent much in it for the performance, but to see how many people they can attract their attention.

i agree with jdm and sunfighter here... its cool if you get one where you can alter the sound, but picking a certain thing mainly for its sound and not its performance....

well its basically for looks and trying to impress people.

Well with my car I would thing I'm giong to be balanced well with performance and looks. I'm doing all of this for me. I know most will like what I'm going to be done, but I'm sure not all of it will be up for everyone's taste. This post is for me, and others like me, to learn more about the BOV's and the pro's and con's of each, but now it seems everyone wants to add in there .02 about things.

So if you have anything to say about BOV's and there sounds, looks, preformance, and any othere things please post, but if you just want to agree or disafree don't post. I want this post to not become a it does this or that post. Facts only please...

I'm know this is not going to work, but please try to make it....

well the HKS ssqv makes the squeek sound.

on side note....
bovs are all the same really, theyre all just a valve. one doesnt make your car faster than another. so i dont see why you cant pick one by the sound it makes. thats ridiculous. some people take the performance purist @!#$ way to far.
