Turbo installed, now problems
Saturday, July 16, 2005 2:17 PM
So I finished installing a t3 super 60, intercooled custom kit. Fuel upgrades are 30# injectors, fmu, walboror pump, and afpr. I have pics but my computer dosent feel like uploading them from my camera.

Now for the problem. I dont know if im making boost or not. I know my turbo is making boost because I can hear my wastegate dumping (external with open dump) But im getting no psi at the manifold. My boost gauge reads 20in/hg at idle and rises up to 0 but never makes boost. Sometimes it only gets up to 10in/hg. I think the blow off valve isnt staying closed im gonna add some washers.

Could the probem be that i have my wastegate hooked to my compressor. Should i run a vac line from the intake maniflod to the wastegate. How do you guys have yours?
What is the normal difference between pressure at the compressor and pressure at the manifold.

I connected my boost gague directly to the compressor and it made some boost, About 3psi. I didnt want to rev it too much.

Any questions/ comments are appericated.

Yeah on my 300ZX Turbo the waste gate line goes to a manifold vac source.

I have the wastegate hooked to the compressor on my car with no problems.

i would run it to the intake manifold, but its realy not gonna make too much difference maby a lb or two at the most. what is your wastegate set to open at, check all your conectors for leaks? can you hear the bov going off?

Do you have internal or external wastegate. Also should the bov be open at idle?

The bov goes off but its not very loud. Wastege is 5.9 psi tial 38mm.

Check your charge pipe connections.

Are you in neutral or actually driving the car? I can rev mine to limiter in park and barely make 2 psi but while driving it will go all the way to where i set it .

I was in park and I think that is part of the problem. I took it out on the road for a litte bit and it seemed to be doing better... Still didnt make boost, but I didnt push it that hard. The wastegate opened and the bov went off tho... so maybe my boost gauge is retarded.

I got my camera working so here are a couple pics.

I went through the same thing your going through when i first started my car i was convinced something was $#@%'d up but that night watched my guage eventually climb as i drove it. Also check to make sure the boost guage line isnt pinched especially if its one of those nylon ones. You sohuld be able to blow into the guage and make the needle move a lil bit ( if u have any lung capacity ). Remember your only gonna be gettin full boost if your really on it Good luck working out the bugs and nice set up.

if your car isnt under load your not going to build boost,

Exactly what Brandon said.

That setup is nowhere near pretty... functional but not pretty.

Are you sure the welds are 100% good?

Take it for a ride... and test your boost gauge and check the lines. Even at mild throttle I can build a pound or two of boost.

I took it on the highway ant got it up to 3 or 4 psi. But I was running off the scale rich. Then the line for my bov gave up and collapsed so i need some better vac line. I was gonna keep messing with it but it started to rain like crazy. It did seem to pull from 0 to 70 pretty nice. Im gonna hook my boost gauge directly to my compressor and see how much boost im getting at the compressor. Maybe my wastegate is opening before 6 psi.

When you guys let off the gas after you run it up in boost what does the af drop to. Is it normal to go lean for a sec or two when you let off the gas?

Our ECU's are programmed to go lean during deceleration for fuel economy reasons.

My Vaccum also drops to about -22 hg.

A/F during deceleration may go all the way up to 20:1

mine was jumping up past 17:1 and kinda freaked me out. good to know thats normal. At least I have plenty of fuel, I guess its time to turn up the boost.

The fuel economy thing obviously makes sense, but my LM1 registers 20.8% O2 (same as free air) when decelerating for long periods, which is obviously as good as a fuel cut. I didn't really think about it before but is that suppose to happen? I do have a nice exhaust leak before the O2 (which is a big nono).. hmm

^ If im getting 6psi at my compressor and only 3 psi at my intake manifold then I will know im leaking through one of my connections. But if im only getting 3psi at the compressor then I will know my wastegate is opening too soon.

I'm not sure that idea is gonna work. If there is a leak anywhere between your compresson and the maniflold the entire section of pipe is going to read the same pressure level. It won't read say 6 psi at the compressor and less at the point where it is leaking. Its just gonna read a low amount everywhere.

I had the same problem, it ended up my boost gage hose was kinked long the firewall, but I hooked it up to the vaccuum lines and now it reads boost ok. but the only real way to see if you got boost if you can really feel the difference when driving the car. by revving it up it realy can't register. I have a turboxs blow off valve and it will not make noises unless it sees about 2psi and let off the gas. granted its an auto.

Met up with Tom yesterday to see the kit. The pictures arent the greatest, he really has done his home work. Another thing to mention he is not done with it, I really was impressed.

I dont know how he got all the things he did under the hood with that huge automatic transmission! We looked at mine next to his, and I have alot more room.

He noted several of the vac lines had collapsed and was going to replace them, I also noticed mine to the fpr had collapsed and a vac cap was leaking!

Good job Tom!

Hope to see you again when you get it tuned!
