Jcavi tear down and rebuild progress thread..... again
Saturday, January 23, 2010 4:04 PM
Ill spare everyone the annoying back story, you either know me or not either way its about the cars right..?
however for the sake of keeping you up to speed I will say this. this car has been an ongoing project for about 5 years, its never truly been finished. even though Ive only been working towards one real goal of a perfectly driveable boosted automatic cavalier. my car has littlery shaped my life and has lead me down the path I follow right now. I spent about 1 year destorying a perfectly good car (as many on hear will tell you) and Ive been trying to properly fix it ever since. Im extermly close and I think (as always) this last stretch will put me over the top.

so yeah /annoying back story....sorry.

The goal here is to log from beginning to end another one of my cars millions of phase's. The way it sits right now the car is drivable, with a ruff tune set threw HPT. In fact I was able to drive it from PA to my new House in Maryland. and it actually drove relatively smooth,

My ace in the whole with the new house is the garage, the previous owner was a gear head and actually installed an engine hoist itno the ceiling . With a roof over my cars head, I will be able to really tear it down with out the wrath of an angry step father ready to set it on fire if any parts are left undone by night fall.

With the car in good working order, I can take my obligatory two steps back to take three forward. Even though the car drives, there are some key things that need to be addressed. for starters under heavy load, the turbo is hitting the fire wall, I atribute this to a straight back ebay manifold,

solution? atomics newly released manifold. the next step is the charge pipes. there are leaks all over the place, under smoke they hold little to no pressure. then Im going to move on to cleaning up the engine bay. this will consist of redoing the brake lines. Im going to delete ABS and go for a clean look. Im also going to try my hand at a Jbody wire tuck. last but no least some much needed body love.

Im giong to hopefully document this whole shabang and will be able to share it all with you guys.

tommorws task will be to remove the turbo and manifold and snap some picks for atomic so he can fab a manifold for me

cheers

assuming everything goes to plan im coming to the bash Ive been trying to make it for years. I feel like that would be a good bench test for the car.

didnt give up on the MS, lets just say ive postponed it. one of the lessons this car has taught me is finish the project your working on before you move on to another one. so I riped off the squirt, and replaced the entire engine harness. Im using HPT to lay down a base tune. I need to get everything running properly with the nuts and bolts beofre I move on to the eletric side of things.

Thanks for the support guys. Phil your welcome over anytime but you got remember I'm in MD thats a serious drive, but if your down I got cold ones in the fridge.

So I have some small updates. I did get the front end off the car, charge pipes dissembled, and I got the turbo and manifold off the car.

Im trying to clean everything up and basically shed the car of anything im not proud of. With that said while I work with atomic on getting the manifold setup im going to start focusing on the little things. I know this practice is sorta taboo by my own words, but I can attribute the new skill to being a professional and when done properly wont result in stupid mistakes. With that said, my next step is to move over to the right half of the engine, and start cleaning up the brakes evap stuff, fuel lines and anything else.

I didnt realize how bad, it was hitting. Im hoping I didnt do any serious damage. either way Im in this one till the end, if the motor is damaged ill pull it. nothings stopping me, not this time.

Im going to have to pull out a bigger eraser for some of my more serios blemishes. I have to say though, I made a different kind of mistake on this one, its not so obvious at first. This is how MINION left my intercooler when I picked it up. the guy took my car and just stopped awnsering my calls. So I came and picked it up. The mistake "I" made was that I had no contingency plan, nothing to back me up if the guy tried to screw me. I lost a bit of innocene in that encounter but it was for the best. sometimes you have to watch your ass even if it means coming off to a random stranger as being a bit of an ass.

So thats really it nothing big.

Can anyone throw me out an Idea for redoing the brake lines? Im taking out the absmodule, and lines and just running the hardlines down under the car, and just split them there I think as little seen as possible the best. any suggestions ?

So I didnt want to post anything until I actually had something to post. well now I do. :-)

came in over the weekend. its atomic's shorty manifold.

With the new manifold in, that only leaves a few pieces left to the puzzle. I have my new Lincoln welder on the way. Ill make sure to get pics when it comes in.

Also Ive been trying on some turbos over at my buddys house. He's a vendor for a new turbo company called SPAturbos. they make some quality stuff. and for the price he's hooking me up with its kind of a no brainer. I was mating some up just to get an idea of fitment, but Im actually pretty much sold at this point. Im going to be running the SPA 5000. its a bit bigger then your run of the mill GT30. it will breathe to about the mid 5's, which is just about where I want the peak horsepower to be.

So im waiting for the welder but in the mean time I have to start looking aronud for a wastegate. the flange is a 44m V-band. Im thinking the TIAL 44, and then just running the dump straight down. either way Ill be sure to keep the org in the loop.

till next time.

I could be wrong, but that compressor housing looks much smaller than a GT30's.... The manifold looks awesome.

its about the same frame size but thats got some puny .50 ar. housing. The head is stock, so Im not gonna keep things mild until I can do it all together. I still shouldnt have any problems getting into the low to mid 400's Im just gonna have to spool the hell out of it, but im not worried because its got a 1 year warranty....

the only concern is what is gonna happen to the trans when it sees power again. its the only thing that came with the car.

Getting there.
