still trying for boost
Saturday, November 07, 2009 4:30 PM
Im on here just about every day, but I rarely post anything. Most dont know my story, but there are a few that have kept tabs. And for them even though I have claimed victory many times. Ive never actually gotten the car to work right..... not once.

For the past three years I have trying... yes trying to boost my car. I have never really had any place to put it , and never really had enough money to do it right. I have moved it from place to place over the years harboring it anywhere some one will let me. Friends, parents, school wherever. eventually my time runs out and i had to move it. I would get to work on it when I had time. I can honestly say that I spent the first year compleatly @!#$ my car up, and the past two fixing the mistakes. when I started I had a barley running megasquirt driven, glued together turbo mess. my down pipe was stick welded. My vacuum lines were for aquatic purposes, my blow off valve and everything else was held together with JB weld. Ive had to redo my oil return multiple times, Ive replaced the head, Ive rewired the entire engine bay, swapped down pipes, redone charge pipes with proper metal. but most importantly recently, Ive given up the pipe dream (for now) that is megasquirt. Friday, I ordered HPT and am going to hopefully have it by this weekend. If im lucky I should be able to claim it for real this time.

this was the most recent step in getting it back to normal. I had my freind comeover and we cranked out the harness in about two hours.

one with the bumper off

and on, from a stand you cant even see it. I have had many people walk by and ask why I didnt get a front mount.

the car came with a chrome tip

and yes the car has a built motor and turbo and is still on stock springs. this isnt integral to making the engine work properly, so I have deemed it unnecessary for now.

And this is what I do now. The funny thing is, is that this whole thing ended me up with a career. My parents forced me to go to automotive school with as much time as I spent on the car. 2 years of tech school and I get to play with other peoples MINI's all day.

Glad to hear you are getting some time to work on it, sucks to see you dropping the MS. HPT should work for what your doing tho.

Yea I rememember seeing this car being moved all around, and wasnt there some mishap when it was in a friends shop?? Anyways, a fresh wiring harness and hpt should get you going if all other issues are figured out. Ill be watching for sure! Im rocking a mild steel tip as well hahahah.

Off topic, but why have I seen multiple eco's with the hot side piping going into the fender while using the stock coolant res, but never any ld9's?

wow. you're not making the sale of MS any easier to me. i already dont wanna deal with all the wiring/splicing BS. on one hand i find myself kind of turned away from MS because of this, on the other i always have remembered you're car and dealings with MS when i ever think about it. so i dont know if thats a good thing or a bad thing... LOL

care to share what the problems were?

glad to see you are still in the game.

I must confess... I feel like a monster!

glad to see you didnt just throw in the towel, im curious as well to know what the problems where. imo to get megasquirt to work on our cars is to have an external trigger wheel setup, getting rid of the icm. the icm i think was the root of my problem, needed to just simplify the system.

Joe man I cant tell you how many times you post up pictures. and im thinking "muther@!#$r he finished antoher one. and Im still sitting in a driveway" thanks for keeping up.

The freinds shop was MINION he was a big name on her a while ago. He turned out many reliable cars. He would of turned out adam's (NJHK) sunfire in a day if they didn't have wrong parts. So I figured screw it he's reliable shot. convinced my parents to lend me some money. unfortunelty he took my car and my money and stoped calling. no updates no phone calls, nothing. I would drive to maryland and show up at his door and be like "what the hell" eventually I got tired of his bull@!#$ and took my car.

From the start I should of stayed away from megasquirt. MS is an amazing tool and in the right hands can suite any project. however I have an auto trans, and would need to parallel the stock ecu with the MS. So that in it self was a hassle. also running MS requires certain sensors to be there. one very impotant one is the crank signal. on an ECO this is espically hard to come across. becuase it is the wrong signal type, and it is in a frequency that the MS doenst understand. so I had to try and modify the sgianl type and frequency. also since I was keeping my stock ECU i had to run two of every sensor, or recalibrate both sensors. I chose to double up. and Last but not least general knowldge of tuning. For the past three years Ive not only been working on this car but Ive been reading. I read every peice of liturature I could get my hands on, anything about tuning cars or J's. But all the book knowldge in the world couldn't teach me the things that I had to learn just by making mistakes. things like if a seal is going to hold, or what tool is right for what job. Or that using a pepboys 3/8 torque wrench on your cam bearing bolts is a bad idea.

You live and learn and at some point you figure it out. crazy how that works

Not to add insult to injury but the MS can control the automatic trans now. What has me curious is how you say the eco reluctor wheel isn't registered by the MS? Please if you can explain the problem in more detail.

Your car litterally looks like it puked up a wiring harness. I know hindsight is 20/20 but I can't help but think the MS was a bad idea for you. I would think if the automatic was determined to be that big of a problem with the MS then selling that car and buying one just like it except a 5 speed would have been a much better idea or even leaving the electronics alone and going the old school FMU route.

My megasquirt can't. ms1

also alot of my issues are circumstantial. being that my car never really had a home, It made it damn near impossiable to work on. I could try something, but if it didnt work perfectly then I would have to wait weeks before I could take another swing.

I havent abonded MS just postponed. Thanks for the support guys Im keep updates.

Wow, good luck still going at it, I think this is the longest ongoing incomplete project on jbo, even longer than PJ's.

Ahh, yes...the MS1 is a feature rich but abandoned platform. I can also understand the no chance for a second try. The MS just flat out wont work for you in those conditions. Glad to see you not leaving it in the round file tho.

now, hold on. I can work with a second try, third forth, etc ... but at some point reality slaps you in the face, and what needs to be done, finally ways over what wants to be done. Im really not a fan of letting the car beat me, and when the time is right MS will be back on the car, also can you send me any literature on MS and auto trans control I had no idea, it was at that point.

also Tom the worst part about the whole ordeal is that Ive never actually stoped working on it, that car has not gone more then 3 months with the hood closed. But this isnt really something im proud of. This kind of build truly only testify's to ones incompatance. You live and learn I suppose. :-)

I think you took my post wrong. I meant "no time for a second try" as reference to your post about your time frame when you go an work on it.
