hey guys,
i have not been on here in a while so i thought i would drop in and give some updates with the car. Everything is going rather well now that i finally got all of my parts. I do have some really good news though, because of me SCE now offers their awesome Titan head gasket for our 2.4. They did have one designed already for the 2.3 but not the 2.4. I sent them a stock head gasket from the parts store to them in California and it worked out rather well since all they had to do was move a few oil and water ports around on the computer then just cut it out on the flow bench. For those of you who dont know about SCE, they make some of the best performance head gaskets on the market. They make all of the gaskets for the big dogs like top fuel and funny car racers in the NHRA. I worked with Steve while gettting the gasket made and he was extremely helpful. As for the gasket: they are extremely strong copper head gaskets. the Titan model that i had designed for my 2.4 actually has a .010" stainless steel ring implanted around each cylinder and serves the same purpose as a o-ringed block to head setup which is used for extreme boost setups. SCE claims the Titan will handle up to 25 pounds of boost no problem. I am installing the gasket within a week or two and will update and let you know how it goes. The only draw back is SCE reccomends the gasket must be retorqued after the engine reaches running temps for thirty mins which sucks because that means i basically have to put it together, start it for a half hour and then basically tear it down completely again to get to the head studs on the 2.4 which sit under the cam towers "aaaaaa why me"...... i just thought i would let you guys know we now have another alternative for a head gasket. the only option we had before other than stock was really cometic, which i will never buy ever again "they dont seal well"
Great news for another gasket
Maybe break up the large block of text next time for ease of reading ..
awesome, anxiously waiting for results.
SCE has already made a copper 2.4 head gasket for years but this is the first i've heard of one with the o-ring in the gasket. Thos os pretty cool but i wouldn't have to use a copper gasket on a car that actually gets driven on the street.

sce has offered that for a wail now. i bought 2 of them over a year ago. use the internal combustion seal and you will never have a head gasket problem again.
i dont know why, maybe it was because of the titan model. i just know he said they have had one available for the 2.3 for a while but not the 2.4. you still in the michigan area? i am going to be bringing the car out this summer for woodward to see my brother. we should get together and run these b*******

So whats the difference between this copper and my cometic HG? Im not sure if im liking my cometic. I dont think its sealing very well.. Exhaust is smokey.

Copper is one piece of copper. Will require a retorque of the head bolts/studs. Cometic is multi layer steel that does not require a retorque. However Cometics never liked to seal on my engine so I refuse to use them again.
Ahhh I see, thx

That's cool to have another head gasket for our cars but if you thought the cometics didn't seal wait until you try to seal that copper gasket, especially if your car is a street orostreet/strip car. Copper gaskets leak coolant like a runny faucet on a street car and the trick to the Cometics is following the block & head prep instructions then drilling out the rivets and using copperseal spray on each layer of the mls. I know because i have them on my Procharged 383 sbc and they're going on my turbo 2.3/2.4 hybrid.
I drilled out the rivets on my last Cometic and used copper spray sealer on both sides of each layer (against Cometics advice) and it held for over 16K miles before I toasted piston and head. The gasket survived the destruction but wont be reused ever.
Daniel, any updates?
Im guessing this gasket isnt recommended for a street\track car right?

Copper just isn't the best choice for a street car. It requires constant retorquing of the head to maintain proper tension on the head bolts because copper is so soft. Every heat/cool cycle of the engine takes away a little tension as the head and block expand and squeeze harder on the gasket, then release as they cool.

On a similar note, I just toured a copper facility last night, whos VP is a racing enthusiast. They make custom gaskets, as well as have a contract for Mr. Gasket in thier shop.
They can make any gasket to almost any thickness, all in house. Pretty nice little operation. They are located literally right down the road from where I work. If anyone has interest, I would be willing to drop off a gasket for them to copy and make.
**Edit that** They already have the 2.4 gasket....However if anyone is interested in 2200 or eco, I can a gasket to them.

hey guys,
sorry i have not updated the post for a few weeks. i am at college full time for another week or two then finally summer. as for the car, the gasket is working great. there is no sign of anything leaking "oil or coolant". yes you guys do make some good points in some of the posts. yes, i know that copper is not the best choice for the street but i was out of options. i had tried everything i could think of and decided to give SCE a try. I encourage you guys to do some more research on the particular gasket i am using and talking about. they have done numerous hours of testing with the gasket under a variety of conditions. not to mention, you can look on the company web page and read about many people who are running the same gasket on different engines and they too are happy customers. again, i am not nocking some of the points made because yes they are true to some point. anyway here is how i installed the gasket on the j body:
installed gasket and torqued to ARP's specs for their head bolt kit 80 ft lb
started engine, let it come up to operating temp, then ran the engine for an additional thirty mins
shut the engine off, disassemble engine and re-torque head studs "only a few studs backed off but not much at all"
started engine and checked for leaks
i have been running the car for about a week and a half at 10 pounds of boost. it runs great, it has not used ANY coolant and oil has stayed in check. i will keep you guys updated more after i get home for summer its just hard sometimes with school work.
Thanks for the update.

what are people opinions on MLS gaskets? I need a good LD9 HG to handle 9+ psi .074" thick and needs a 92mm bore. i just need something to handle the demands of my turbo hybrid. I'm not really wanting to try cometic with what everyone has been saying.
