Turbo Rebuild
Monday, November 12, 2007 11:38 AM
Hey guys,

I have a boosted 2005 2.2L Ecotec Sunfire
My car is smoking outta my exhaust, white smoke, but only smoke when im stopped at a stop light in Drive, but not in park.

And i checked around my turbo and it looks like its leaking oil, so i was wondering if i can get a turbo rebuild kit like this one off ebay.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=120181272566&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=002

That should work for a T3 that came outta of a VW with a swapped turbonetics compressor side right? BTW my turbo has alittle shaft play,
will the rebuild kit fix that too?

If you can take time look at pictures of my turbo would be great!

Link here for pictures: http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=5014496&postcount=105

Any help will be appreciated!!!

Kid you make my head hurt!

For starters. The gear you have your transmision in has nothing to do with if your car smokes or not. If you are sure it is white smoke that is a good indication of a blown head gasket. Do you have any coolant in your oil or vice versa?

I can't tell much about your turbo from those pics. Does it have any #s stamped on it.? Can you get ahold of the person you got it from?

Ughh, not fun
Are you sure its white smoke and not bluish white? Does the smoke feel wet like steamy and kinda sticky? Is there oil leaking around the external housing of the turbo, or is it internal, check the charge pipes and compressor housing and see if there is any oil residue build up. Some shaft play is normal on a sleeved turbo, also check to see if the wheels are contacting the housing pulled to either side.

If the turbo is leaking oil externally, it could just be your feed lines. There are experts on here that will know more about your specific turbo as for the rebuild kits,

Well there could be an rpm range where it smokes most and after a certain speed its just dissipating. You can get a cheap blown head gasket kit at autozone to test with.

there is a wet spot from the exhaust side of the turbo. hmm so its normal that the shaft has a little play in it? I have a cometic head gasket for my car if its my head gasket..

Spot of what? If the turbo is causing the smoke, most likely it is leaking on the compressor side.

K my mechanic said my head gasket isnt blown, its just leaking oil and we think its leaking oil through the exhaust pipe, and the oil feed line isn't straight up and down, dont know if that would make a difference..

I just had to pull and rebuilt my turbo. I had white smoke at startup. Mostly the first startup of the day, as it had the most amount of time for oil to build up and then burn off. Before you pull your turbo double check your feed and return lines and make sure that the drain is in fact still draining freely, and the feed line is still restricting oil, so there is no pressure. (might as well check the smaller things before you pull the turbo). Just out of curiosity, what kind of turbo is it? and how old is it?

I also got my rebuild kit from www.gpopshop.com they can get you whatever you need as far as turbo components, they were very helpful. If you get a full rebuild kit it will come with all of the internals, including the bearings that will fix the shaft play (although a minor amount as mentioned is normal, as long as its not hitting the walls of the casings).

And if your doing the rebuild yourself, its actually really easy, i was surprised... the hardest part was cracking the bolts loose. I followed a tutorial just in case, as it was my first time doing a rebuild although i found i really didn't need it. I can give you a link if you'd like.

I just put the turbo back in this weekend and no more smoke, its running like a champ.

REALLY?? Wow i hope it will fix my problem too.. I dont have a restrictor on the feed side of the oil, what do they look like and where do i get one?

Do you think its the restrictor's problem? Yeah your problem sounds like mine and there is probably a build up inside there.. my car been smoking for 2 weeks now and i still have to drive it everyday..

But yeah if you can help me out with a tuturio that would be AWESOME!!

Thank you =]

if you dont have a restrictor on it i would deffinatly see that being the problem. you may have already blown your oil seals by now in the turbo if its seeing all that oil pressure. so you may still need to rebuild it. but you never know, be worth a try putting a restrictor on it and see if the problem persists or disapears.

you can use any type of feed line flange or fitting that has a tiny hole drilled through it so that the oil cant blow through it freely.

I see, how big should the hole be?

Thank you for helping me =]

generally around the size of a needle - give or take. very small. enough so if you blow through it, you can get air through it easily, but it gives alot of resistance.

I see, it wont be too little oil for the turbo?

If you have that full oil pressure, its way too much for the internals. You just need enough to keep a steady flow to keep it cool/lubricated. WIth all the oil pressure behind the restrictor, it keeps it coming.

I looked at my oil feed line and it has a very small pin hole flange, so now im pretty sure the seals are gone..

So can you give me the link for the tuturio? that would be great!

Thanks
