2200 Boost Help (sorta)
Tuesday, June 27, 2006 2:38 PM
Hello All. I have a 2002 Sunfire with a 2200 engine. I am looking for another project to increase engine power before i do the cosmetics work (want to make it actually fast, before it looks like it should be fast).

I plan on getting a turbo kit. I also am going to install the stage 3 racing head that i got as soon as its back from the machine shop.

My question is this. A buddy of mine has an srt-4 that he whores around like no other. What do i have to do to my motor to make it faster than that car? and is it even possible with the 2200? (id like to try and stick to the 2200 because its the underdog motor, but a motor swap isnt out of the question)

I plan on getting probably the stage 2 turbo kit from Hahn. What else do you recommend getting or doing along with this kit?

thanks for any help!

i like to have all my reading done before i go spending

its safe if u have a good tune and the right fuel upgrades. i was pushing 15psi in mine till i got greedy and turned it up to 19 and broke 2 ringlands on 2 pistons.

ill be doing fuel upgrades, an fmu, injectors, probably a fuel pump as well. and eventually getting an MSD DIS II ignition system.

does the stock fuel pump hold up to something like what 10psi would require?

yeah, but pumps are finicky like that, it might hold up for a week or for a year, but it'll hold, just make sure you have plans to replace it eventually, and make sure you install a fuel pressure gauge, preferrably with an isolator so you can actually see if the pump is going out rather then finding out the hard way.

well i ran my stock pump at 15psi for about a month then it went out.

who are you kidding

I did it at 8psi................ with a rich AFR............................ at the track......................

2200 turbo = 14.4 @ 102.xx................................

SRT4 = 14.7 @ 95...................

then the srt4 got it down to a 14.2......................... so it was faster at the end of the day..............

CAVI DEMON.................

how long were you running 15psi before you turned it up.............
how was it handling the boost...... did you notice motor fatigue ???

how were you idling your injectors and which injectors.....................

same sort of set up as mine ????

Just swap in a eco and work from there. Your always gonna want to be faster. With the 2200 you are limited.

Who wants to dig.

I was useing the red top injectors, with the 2027 cartech. and i was running 15psi for about 6 or 7 months then i got greedy. or a fuel leak that i found when i took the motor out. it was def. likeing the boost before i got greedy. i was useing a narrow band and it was saying it was in the green at wot. just dont kno the exact afr. lt1 afpr. didnt notice motor fatigue though. when i took the head off the motor looked clean except for the broken pistons. the thing i hated was i never dynoed it. ill tell u 1 thing though when im done building it in the next couple months ill be shootin for around 20psi with a 48ar exhaust and 70ar compressor turbo. just need mo money

spoken like a true moron...

sure go ahead and spend 1000+ for a ecotec swap, and only gain about what 30+ hp when you can take that 1000 and piece together your own turbo setup... and be faster...

i still dont understand why all these ecotec guys are always bashing the 2.2 or 2200 ohv... i guess its because us who stick with it arent just another face in the crowd.....

Im very fond of both motors, however i think its more of an ego boost if you can stomp someone with a more, archeic style motor. i dinno, underdogs all the way in my book...

i guess throwning a fuel pump in the mix couldnt hurt.

thanks for the info guys

From wat i have learned everywhere..... 2200s are perfect for boost. They handle it well stock and a stage 2 will work completly fine and run great. But new headers, fuel injectors, UR FAN ON A SWITCH (KEEP YOUR ENGINE COOL!!!!) and new rods maybe...... but you could also regrind your crank and get new pullies so they will run easier and you can gain more torque. Welll there is a couple of my ideas (INFORMATION ALSO PROVIDED FROM LEE)

I think you meant balance and knife-edge the crank, and grind the camshaft but I got the point and I hope he did too hehe. It also depends how stock his srt-4 is, having seen more than a few 300hp+ around town with just a mopar package upgrade. It all depends who's got deeper pockets I always say.

seriously.........

hahahah

The only info in his post that I gave him was about engine cooling........ not about regrinding the crankshaft...... or new headers ???? huh ?? there is a turbo manifold.... and a downpipe...... no headers......

might as well remove the timing chain completely when you install the newly reground crankshaft.... bahahahah

sorry but damn, a little mixed up ???

how were those red tops idling ?????

did you have any engine lights or problems with them idling..... See I have a set ..... I used them at the bash..... at 8psi ........... the car loved it........ but hated idling them.....................

the only thing different from mine and yours set-up's is the AFPR........ you have the LT1 ..... I have some other AFPR.......

what idle pressure ??

basically I need to know everything you did to get them to run well enough to use everyday....

thanks

A. who knows what your car is going to run with X mods.
B. who knows whats done to the srt4 or how the guy can drive, ive seen complety stock srt4s go 13.9 at this sea level (my friend actually)

just build the car and see what it does, and if you beat it for gods sakes dont go around bragging and bragging i cant stand that. whenever someone beats an srt4 its a neon, but when its the other way around its the amazing SRT4!!!

Its a stock srt4 right now, and he doesnt actually plan on modding it yet, however if i were to beat him he would most likely upgrade it, and id be a part of that project.

I dont plan on bragging or anything if i do beat him, i just set it as a goal for how fast i want my car to be for the first major roun of modding it, thats all, a benchmark lets call it. i still think that the srt4 is an amazing car, the only reason i dont have one tho is because too many people i know have one, and i wanted to do something unexpected and different.

the 2200 is jsut a slow motor, it takes a lot to get it fast, thats all
