Turbo 2.4 falls on its face a 5000rpm
Monday, June 12, 2006 1:56 PM
OK so here's my problem. When I floor the gas pedal, the car accelerates just like it should. When it revs to 5000rpm, it just falls on its face. I don't know how to explain it, but it basically just stops accelerating. I can keep the pedal to the floor and the engine stays at 5000rpm, but it just doesn't pull anymore. It almost feels like it sort of drops into neutral and just free revs at 5000. It'll accelerate in any gear completely normal until it hits 5000. I have a wideband and it doesn't go too rich or too lean so it can't be the fuel right? I have no Idea what it might be. Anyone have any suggestuions?

This is my setup:
'99 2.4 Turbo Automatic
T3 turbo
2.5" charge pipes
FMIC
HO intake manifold
4 extra injectors that come on during boost
B&M Shift plus
Full 3" turbo-back exhaust with Magnaflow high flow cat

How many lbs. of boost are you running? Also do you have a boost gauge hooked up showing that?

~Boost. Its what's for dinner!~

Any harsh noises or anything, could be in the top end of the motor, but sounds more of a ignition problem.

What are you running for an air filter?

what do your spark plugs look like?

External wastegate is set for 8psi...and it shows 8 on the boost gauge. No weird noises or anything, it just stops accelerating. T3 turbo .48/.42. I see constant low 12 AFR's. I use a cone air filter on a flexible tube...it's not a K&N just a generic filter. I haven't pulled the plugs.

Another thing....I tried it again yesterday and it did the same thing...but this time I kept my foot in it for a second or two longer and after it stopped accelerating at 5000, it stayed there for a few seconds like before, then it finally shifted and then did the same thing in the next gear. So it's almost like I floor it and then at 5000 it hesitates for a few seconds before it shifts. But it should rev right to redline before it shifts like it did before I noticed this happening last week.

Also, I have the B&M set on setting 1. I'll try setting 2 today and see what happens...maybe it's the transmission...

does it really just stop at 5000, or does it just move really slow

what trim is the turbo? is it new or off a different car? the stock .42/.48 that comes on alot of factory cars, is way to small for a 2.4 and loses breath at the top of the RPM's..so if its just revving slower than before, could be because of that

Thats what I was gonna suggest.. Can you turn the B&M completely off then try seeing if it shifts past 5000 rpm's?

Don't know the trim but it's the stock turbo off of a different car. It's not too small, it provides good power right up to redline. And before last week it revved right to redline with no problem, pulling hard all the way up. But yes it literally just stops accelerating at 5000. It doesn't rev past 5000rpm. I go from WOT pulling real hard to 5000 and then it just stops going and the whole car shifts forward, like in a manual car if you were to pull WOT to redline then let off the gas still in gear...that's what it feels like. I don't know how else to explain it.

I'll go try that now actually. I won't be back online until tomorrow so I'll let you know what happens then.

At first I was thnk he was blowing out spark, but starting to sound like a tranny issue. I had a issue like this. The MSD rev limiter was set too low and the car would not shift under WOT and bounce off the rev limiter (of the MSD).

I was thinking fuel system, is it still stock or did you add a bigger fuel pump?

i can gaurentee you that the turbo is losing breathe and effeicency on a 2.4l that high of revs, though it may not be your problem. so its no help right now

Didn't some guy have this same problem and it ended up being that the fuel pump couldn't keep enough gas in the cup?

might have been said already but ill say it any way.... i will put money on it that is your injectors.... EXACT! same feeling in my car and in my dads car untill bigger injectors were put in.... 8psi on a turbo you should at the very least have 370cc injectors... i personaly would go with 440cc just so you know your safe

The First Twin Charged jbody
blue car (R.I.P) - 240whp @7psi..
silver car - 305whp 315lbs.tq @15psi (91 Octane) or 420whp & 425lbs.TQ @20psi (94 octane+Alcohol Injection)
All dynos run on a Mustang dyno

not sure how thick that flexiable tube is. maybe that is colapsing ? i would try running with that disconnected and a little screen clamped on the turbo and see.

Thanks for the comments...I'm glad you guys like my engine bay

Josh F - I use 4 370cc injectors as the extra injectors that come on during boost, in addition to the stock injectors. Plus I see constant low 12's on my AEM wideband gauge, so I highly doubt it's fuel starvation.

Jake - That flexible hose is real thick....it almost feels like hard plastic cut into the shape of a hose. I promise you it's not collapsing.

I'm starting to think it's a transmission problem myself. Right now I'm tight on money til tomorrow and I don't have much gas left so I don't want to waste what I have by pusing it into boost too much. But i'll try changing the setting on the B&M, as well as turning it off, and see what happens.

sounds like a tranny is slipping at really high rpm to me.

OK so I tried again with the B&M on setting 2 and then turned off.....same thing still. When it's turned off, I can feel it starting to slip when I'm hard on the throttle and it goes into boost. On setting 1 or 2, there's no noticeable slippage, it just stops accelerating at 5000, stays there for a couple seconds then shifts and accelerates in the next gear...until 5000 again. I'll try manually shifting and getting to 5000 while not in boost and see if it does the same thing. This is starting to make me not happy...
