Well I am stuck between these 2 intercoolers. I have the Type-J front bumper and I want a cooler that will fill the mouth of that bumper nicely. I have found 2 different coolers, one is 28x7x2.5, and the other is 30x11x3. Which should I get?
Thanks,
-Paul
What kind of boost are you going to be running and whats the pressure drop on both intercoolers?
i will tell you now... the second one that is 30x11x3 will be to tall... even with a type J kit unless you plan on being a fool like most and cutting your bumper out.... the 28x7x2.5 will fit nicly behind your opening in the bumper if you just install it hanging of the bottom of your bumper ( i can look for my mounting pictures if you need)

wow thats a bold statement. u must be calling 90% of the turbo community in ANY CAR fools. Simply stated, a car that was not turbo w/ a front mount from factory isn't suppose to have an intercooler up front now is it?

so your saying every one cuts out their front bumper? rather than going with an intercooler that fits? no they dont... look around.... that bumper is there for a reason.... but be my guest to figure that out on your own when you actually need it..
and no a factory NA car isnt suposed to have it so thats why you work with whats there... you dont go half assed and start chopping stuff out just cuz its "in your way" you work around it... thats why a properly made kit requiers no cutting.... take a look at HAHN kits... do you see him designing it so you have to cut stuff out? NO you dont... so dont go telling me that you have to cut it out... thats just showing you dont want to work around STRUCTUAL parts of your car or parts that are needed
i can list you all the top end turbo kits for cars from civics, to muscle cars.... NONE! of them require the front bumper to be cut... not even high end turbo kit companys do this... it would be illegal for them to sell you this and have you cut somthing like this out... come on guy use your heads here...

oh and no im not saying 97blkZ24 and Skilz10179 have bad turbo kits made, im just saying you guys either dont care what would happen if you ever needed that front end... or just didnt feel like getting an intercooler that fit....

yea but its the hight that determans if you have to cut your bumper or not... yours is only 6" tall.... i belive up to a 7.5" will fit behind a bumper with out it hanging down or cutting out your bumper

Josh, those mass-produced turbo kits aren't made to be as efficient as possible, they're meant to be easy to install and as clean as possible for as little as possible. Comparing those to a custom kit by someone looking to get more power with more compromises is comparing apples to oranges. There's a reason top-fuel dragsters don't run minivans full of groceries...you can't have everything.

better a delay than a disaster.
Just to clarify I think by bumper Josh means the actual shock absorbsion part behind the fascia.
AHha o Josh....Man you dont need tooo big either or would be finee....Just pressure loss with too big...specialy if its really thick ...More area more cooling but with stock bumper your basically limiting that aswell..

so then if one that is 32x6x3" which fits with out cutting out the bumper and is good to aprox 300+hp then why is there a need for a bigger one? how many of you are pushing over 300hp? so then explain to me why you need one thats good for 600+hp? does it make you look and feel cool? it must... until you run into some one and have to explain why your front bumper (brace) wasnt there .... thanks but ill take the leagal way and not risk the one time when you need that bumper...

I would get the one good to 300 hp if I was only gonna be running that. I will have more than that, therefore I get the bigger one. Plus on the other end of the stick, nothing looks better than an Import Fighter front bumper with the whole opening being intercooler.

I could have sworn you claimed that you wanted 400+hp?
Anyway, it isn't rocket science getting 300hp out of a 2.4 or ecotec. IMO, running a bare minimum is waaaaay more halffassed than cutting your bumper. You can risk the high cylinder temperatures all you want. Besides, your sunfire getting in a front end colision is going to do the same "totalled" damage as any other car on here with a cut bumper. It's made to crush. Just adding a FMIC to my golf I chose a nice size intercooler that would fit without cutting the bumper just because it is one less thing I would have to buy new if I ever needed to go back to stock. The sunbird, I cut absolutely everthing I could ft an angle grinder to. In the end it is still just a crappy car with an awesome motor.
Just to reiterate on that... "up to 300hp" means 300hp max.
