Time to buy parts.... need OPINIONS!!!
Saturday, May 20, 2006 11:45 PM
Ok, I have decided on what I want to buy.... except for two things...
1) the turbo
2) the intercooler

Right now I have been researching different turbos and how the will perform with my engine... It has always been to my understanding that the T3 Super 60 is the best turbo for the eco stock... problem is the engine isn’t going to be stock for long... and I don’t want to spend the money on a turbo twice.... so I need the ORG's help.

My Goal:
300 WHP now @ 10 psi daily, 15 psi track
425-450 WHP built. (This includes full head work, cams, bored and stroked ect.) @ 20 psi daily, 25psi + track

What I’m working with:
Full tubular (equal length) exhaust manifold
38mm Tial wastegate
Intercooler: I’m thinking 32” X 8” X 3”?
Water methanol injection
TurboXS RFL BOV
2.5” mandrel-bent charge pipes
3” mandrel-bent exhaust
HPtuners
AFPR
550cc injectors
Walbro in-tank fuel pump
TurboXS MBC

I need your help picking the right turbo for my application. I have done a TON of research, searched different forums (including this one) to try to get my answers. To meet my goal (turbo wise) I'm thinking of going with a Garrett T04e-60 trim, but I am looking for opinions on this... what may be better for my needs??? Also what would be the equivalent in a ball-bearing turbo?

Secondly I have been having a hard time finding a site that offers good intercoolers for a cheap price… I was going to buy from JRC but is seems as though they have disappeared… Does anyone else know of a good website? I am not a fan of buying things like this on ebay… especially when it deals with my engine…

Any thoughts, comments or questions are welcome… I just need some help here because I have some cash now and it’s burning a hole in my pocket.

if you make 300hp on 10psi then expect to be able to turn it up to 15, I'll worship you. Problem is I don't see that ever happening in the real world without making 10psi the absolute HIGHEST you can make boost (read: higher compression ratio)

300whp on 15psi is doable... a super 60 can do it, Rich's (exterminator) turbo eco is putting down roughly that number with that turbo on that boost level right now... however its all speculation the car is fast as hell but we dont have dyno numbers or track times as of yet... (fuel pump cannot supply fuel anymore.. pressure drops to 50psi)

I think you're blowing wind here buddy. Just spitting off things you've heard elsewhere.

the only stroking to the 2.2 eco I know of would be the billet crankshaft which actually DE-strokes it to 2.0 for a perfectly square engine (bore = stroke) so its stable at high RPMs. Maybe you're thinking about putting in the 2.4 ecotec crankshaft? I don't know.. but to be honest for 400hp you don't have to touch the crank or the head for that really.

If you upgrade the valvetrain with the GM springs, and get some cams better suited to high RPM, you can put a somewhat large turbo on there and make some killer HP (GT30R) in the neighborhood of 400whp. But everyone knows the pistons and rods are the weak link in these motors.. it would last but I'm not sure how long.

This isn't gran turismo. You don't need to do all that crap to make 400hp. if you're serious about making that much horsepower go for a GT30R.

to make it last, get forged 8.9:1 pistons, forged rods, GM racing valve springs (so valvetrain can handle high RPMS), Crane cams (to make higher RPMs useful), 550cc injectors, upgrade the fuel pump, AFPR will take care of fuel, Garrett GT30R turbo, and you should be set.

and if you want to be able to drive it, get a LSD (either team green ($200), Engineered clutch style ($600) or the quaiffe ($1200) and be sure to have good tires all around and an upgraded suspension.

you may run into ignition problems, but if you goto LiveWireRodimus' webpage, he has a very detailed guide to converting to MSD ignition and you can either run stock coils with a lot more juice or put in MSD coils and run an HEI set up (like the OHV)

I think you would have better results with a nitrous or co2 cooler on your intercooler rather than a watermeth setup

lmao...

I love the fact that people automatically assume I’m a newb... I have built engines for years; I just don’t have a whole lot of experience with turbo's. I just didn't want to go into any great detail of what the engine will consist of.... but I think if you look closely you will get an idea...

Usually a motor that has been bored and stroked needs new: Pistons, Rods and Crankshaft.

Yes I have contacted eagle and they will be making me a 2.4 forged crankshaft, and 2.4 forged rods.
I have also contacted JE and Wiseco to get prices on custom .060" over 8.9:1 CR pistons.

As far as the head goes.... i will be getting

Ferrea 1mm oversized valves
Ferrea Valve springs
Titanium Retainers
Bronze valve guides
Comp Cams: Turbo grind
upgraded seats & locks
Full P&P ect.

Ignition:
MSD DIS 2

I also have a hook-up for an LSD, i get them for $800 so of course im going to get that.

Please don’t insult my intelligence. What I’m doing may and is overkill, but built an engine right and make it bulletproof the likelihood of it grenading is low. Not only that, but the more work I do to it, like all that headwork, the easier it is for the engine to make the power, therefore the less boost I have to use to reach my goal.

I will look into the GT30R, and I thank you for that.

the GT30R is your best selection if you're planning on spinning higher RPM (which from the level of modification you're doing won't be a problem)

it should be more than enough for that power output on a 2.4 liter, and its ball bearing and water lubricated so it'll spool a bit quicker and last longer as well.

but you should have a bit of headroom with it as well if you ever want to increase boost
