Engine getting hot do to boost and type j kit..
Friday, May 05, 2006 3:14 PM
I just put my kit on yesterday(type J kit) and when im driving in slow conditions hitting boost occasionally my engine temp is rising to about 215-225 which is above what it was running with my stock bumper on. I shut the car off last night and the fan kept running even when the car was off to try and cool the engine down. Is there anyway to cool the engine down more. There probably isnt but i had to ask.

It's normal for ecotec engine cars for the fan to keep running after the car is shut off.

I'm sure it has something to do w the alum block and head.

HPtuners software allows you to turn on the fan sooner than factory.

I hit a major (and I must say poorly engineered) road work construction site today. I was in virtually stand still traffic for half an hour. I noticed that my temps had crept up and I started to worry. As soon as traffic started flowing again the temps went back to normal. Once air flow started hitting the radiator again the temps quickly dropped back down. My car and my father's (both ECOtecs) will occasionally stay on after the car has been shut off. As long as this is not a constant running temperature and as long as it doesn't get much hotter than that, I would not worry too much about it.

wait isnt that line 195? I know with my kit my car runs a 2 liens below that middle line....

it always ran cooler with the turbo (according to them temp gauge) now that could also be because of the fact I have no ac system...

Alot of my friends noticed with their NA cars when they had the streetfire and Type J kits that it would run hotter than normal. My guess was that the air wasnt being angled into the rad like it does with stock. Im not completely certain of this though.

I wonder if people take the black deflector under the radiator off when they do body kits?

should you or should you not take off the black deflector under the radiator?

DO NOT take it off. It's an air defelctor that forces air over radiator.

I left mine on. I think its because with my stock bumper it had 2 air ducts to let air in the engine and to the radiator. One right below the bumper and the one infront of the radiator, the type j kit eliminates the top on which may be why but im not worried about it at the moment.

I had mine off for quite sometime, and noticed the engine likes to run a little bit hotter, but nothing serious.

When I put it back on a few weeks ago, I didn't notice any change in water temp at all.

I'm not arguing your point, infact I agree, but why I don't have lower water temps now with that deflector in? No clue.

If you want to be sure and safe, put the delfector piece that goes in under the bumper that connects it to the rad support, the piece shaped like a half "U".... that ALSO deflects air upwards just before the actual deflector that is under the car.

Also, you might consider a slightly colder thermostat and an oil cooler.... furthermore some redline water wetter would help a ton.

Good luck I hope you find your issue.

While driving my car, it runs at 195 or sometimes 1 notch below. But when i just leave the car running while its not going no where, it goes maybe 2 notches above 195. It has always done that even when it was stock. And my fan alos runs sometimes after i shut the car off... No worries!!

Last year when I put in my bigger intercooler, I forgot to put the black deflector on and for those couple of days, the car ran hotter than normal. As soon as I put it back on, cool just like before. Just my 2 cents, put it back on!!!

I never took the black deflector off the car. Im going to look for a cooler running thermostat but im not sure where to look. Anyone have any ideas.

ive had the deflector missing under my rad since i bought the car. The scoop thats on the bumper i replaced, as it broke this past winter, and my temps are in the middle, assuming 180-195 or so, but definitly need to get that deflector back on, ordered one when i got the scoop. Other than plastic trees, is there a better way to attach that?

A different thermostat won't help.
