The resolution of the signal. Narrowband is 0-1.25 volts, wideband is 0-5v. Wideband also does not fluctuate as much as a narrowband, and is not based on nerst cell technology. It requires a controller, and usually displays exact values for a/f ratio from around 9:1 to upwards of 21:1

think of it this way , most gauges are narrow sweep , but the speedo and tach's are a wide sweep
they are a larger sweep because you need more accurate readings
a 5" monster tach usually goes 0-10,000 rpm , in 1,000 steps , they also sell them with a 0-8000 so each 1000rpm step will have more range , in that 1000 rpm step (weak example but only thing i can thing of to compair to right now)
so the wider each step can be the more accurate the reading will be
which is what makes the wide band more accurate , it has a wider range to give you info for
wow thank you both for the info. damn thats alot of info. i'm still new to the boosting thing. which would be better to get wide or narrow. i am guessing wide. is there any good brands that i should look at to buy? also is there any books on reading up on turboing a car?

A wideband will actually give you the a/f ratio down to the "T".
AEM Eugo and the LM-1 units are popular...I personally like my Zeitronix Unit. You can read more about it here:

"Maximum Boost" by Corky Bell, one of the best books you can by. You'll learn alot; way more than just sitting at a computer waiting for someone to give you an answer.
Blown.
a wideband is always better. Its pretty unsafe to tune on a narrow band. I have a narrow band and i just use it to make sure im not running lean. I figure as long as i stay in the green im good to go.
