Ooopsies.... What Is Wrong???
Friday, February 17, 2006 7:45 PM
My buddy was driving my car tonight (roommate) and he was out doing his thing.. I asked if he wanted to drive my car since he usually does but hasnt since the major fixing.. and he had some trouble getting my car into 4th and it fell into second and the revs shot up over 7000, now this doesnt worry me since comp cams repeatedly took there ecotec car to over 8500 rpms on stock valvetrain and they had no problems and were amazed... the problem we have is that my car now sounds like a wrx... check the plugs they are clean not dented or hit or anything... we are thinking a bent valve... but no oil smoke or other smoke.. car runs fine just sounds like a wrx and there is a loss in power...

any input guys?

ouch...... I cant tell yea...... ON a 2.4, I've seen the lifters shatter from the same thing....... While the Comp guys reved it up to 8500...... it wasnt a sudden JUMP..... it was a steady rev...... I'd pull your cam cover off, and look around...... before more things get damaged (the shattered lifter in the 2.4 damaged the cam, carrier, valve, spring......)

Good Luck..... and dont let him drive anymore.

7000 rpm? hell i hit 7200 almost every day

the only way you could have BENT a valve is if it made contact with a piston... which shouldn't be possible unless your timing chain slipped (which shouldn't be possible... although, we are talking about phil.... )

could have BURNT a valve since i don't know what goes on with fuel in that situation on a stock J ecu... if it went lean at that speed it could very well have toasted an exhaust valve, especially if the ecu retarded a lot of timing. my advice, compression check ASAP and see whats up. if any one cylinder is 10 psi or more out of whack with the others, time to pull the head and take a look.

and i never did understand how people manage to actually let the clutch all the way out on a downshift into way too low of a gear... i've put it in 2nd instead of forth a few times but ALWAYS noticed before i had even dropped the clutch halfway when suddenly there's too much drag and the revs climb faster than they should... sheesh, pay attention people

Stage three Clutch, aluminum flywheel and no a/c make the clutch engage instantly upon lifting the clutch. If you ever drove phil's car you would know the feeling. It wasn't a regular downshirt either, i was doing it quickly because of traffic. We need to look at the shift linkage too because it seems to be loose causing this mis-shift in 4th from time to time. Like phil said....i fixed it allready. The roller rocker on the exhaust valve closet to the drivers side came off. So i loosened up the cam and put back in there and she runs like a champ now.

My cousin downshifted my eco into second one time by accident, it actually slid the tires . She wasn' t smart enough to realize you press the clutch back in. I just heard screeching tires and revs for about 3 seconds. I was less than pleased. Luckily I had no issues. Sounds like you are back to no good too.

you did get lucky,

my buddy missed shifted like that in his NX2000 and blew the motor(sr20de), well blew all but 2 rockers at the same time, literally shattered most of them. it was nuts
