I just took my 2.4L alternator to a re-build shop, i asked him how many MORE amps can this alternator make if you re-wire it and change the parts, to make it a highoutput alternator. He said, "not much more, because theres not much room inside". But i called a few places and they make alternators for my 99 Z24 that produce 220Amps!!! Does that alt have a bigger housing? How many Amps should i expect if he can do it?
There is such a thing as overpowering. Watch what you're doing man.

when you re-wind your stock alt...it will produce the HIGH OUTPUT at much higher rpm...and around idle the output will be lower.
i would purchase a new one...if you want it to produce the power needed at idle speed..get something like 180-200amp. if you want it to produce power at around 2-3k rpm...then get around 250-300amp range.

how much am i looking at for a new alternator? i know there is a GP on it, but i need it right away, i found a few on ebay, but its not much more power. A 220amp alternator is like $600 CND at AutoZone.
for a 200 amp...i'd say you can expect to pay around 250 for it USD.

i just got a qoute from DOM and its $385 US Shipped to canada (2.4L 200amp). Does that price sound right?
I bought mine off ebay from motorcityrehman. It is a 160 amp alt, for $149 USD + $25 shipped. It cost me $60 for border fees. The total was under $300 Canadian funds to my door in Ontario.
