numerous people have told me that subs can be damaged if i play them with the trunk open because they need the trunk enclosure to play right. is that true? my trunk rattles alot and when i listen to music, sometimes i open the hatch a little. sealed box if it matters.
no, I do not believe you can damage subs because the trunk is open. It will make them sound different while its open, but that will not damage anything.

its practically the same as running with back seat down, and the windows down. Only thing is with the trunk open less stuff would rattle
none of the bass would reflect off the trunk towards the cabin..
you should smack whoever told you that

That's like saying that subs can't be played in suv or large vehicles. It will sound different, that's all
unless you're infinite baffle, you're fine. Even then, it shouldn't hurt them if you're powering them the way IB needs, which is way underpowered.

ok, good, cause my trunk rattles to hell and its almost embaressing listening to music outside of the car like that. so i pop it open a little bit and it sounds fine. thanks.
The reason people think that, is because they are clipping the hell out of their subs in the first place. With the trunk closed they don't hear it, so they think it's okay. When the trunk is open, they can hear it, so they think it's the trunk being open that is doing it.
Like everyone else has said, you won't have any problems.

I was told the same thing about havin the trunk open and playing your subs. Im glad thats not true cuz i tend to want to open my trunk now and then.
i think another possible reason for ppl saying this is cause its harder to hear distortion with the trunk open so say for example somebody showing there freind how loud there stereo is and decide to open the trunk before they crank it, being a new system they dont know the limits of there speakers and with the subs hitting out in the open like that its harder to pick up whether or not there distorting making them more likely to blow. The Local Shop that did my setup said the same thing i didnt really question them on it though *shrugs*
Umm...why would it be harder to hear distortion with the trunk open?

a guy who owns one of the top audio install places in delaware told me that.....but ive had my trunk open many of times and havent hurt anything
only thing i notice is its easier to hear the subs distort when the trunk is open, so i always thought it to be true
glad its not
