Check your amp with a different speaker. If it does the same thing, then unplug the RCA's to the amp and try it. This will troubleshoot the sub, amp, and the RCA's.
Beat it like it owes you money
post the results of that test, this will help people help you
I had a SoundStream Reference 300 do that in the past. I think the speaker leads touched each other, thus frying the amp. As soon as the amp turned on, the sub went into full excursion, and maybe had a constant lightly audible bass note.

the first solution yielded no results and the speaker wires nor terminal never touch. Is there a possibility that my voice coils are dirty and they are sticking.

doubtful. I've run subs in some nasty environments and never had the voicecoils "stick". Either your amp has said goodnight or its receiving a bad signal: check your RCA's from the head unit to the amp - look for any pinches, tears, etc that might be allowing for them to ground out (this is the case 99% of the time). If the cables check out, use an mp3 player/discman/whatever with the headphone->rca adaptor and plug directly into the amp (jumper the remote lead to turn the amp on). If you get sound then take another look at your wiring and start suspecting the head unit (especially if there is a "Kenwood" badge on it)
Hope this helps.
i have found the problem, the bass booster switch was sitting between on and off. turn it on and it works fine. Thanks for all of the help.
