2000 Radio Harness DIY

Ok, heres the deal. I live in Canada so its really hard to find the relocation harness for the radio up here for under $150 Can. So, i made my own for about $40 canadian.

First, i went to crapy tire to get a Dash Solutions GWH-416 DSF harness for about ($12 Can). It says its for The pontiac vibe, Toyota Matrix, and a few Chevy and GMC SUV's and pickups and i think a metro.

Once i had the harness i had to re-arrange the pins to get them the same as my sunfire placement. If you need to know the colour coding, i think i found it at http://www.the12volt.com just do a search for 2003 Sunfire Stereo Wiring Diagram and it should come up. some of the wires that it says though you might not have so dont worry about it.

After I was done moving the pins around, i went to a junker and got them to cut out a harness from a sunfire for about $20 (shop around, some people told me $40 and $35).

Now, once you have the two parts, all you have to send to the factory stereo is the Class 2 wire (purple), the constant 12v, and the larger ground wire, (you will have to split the ground for the aftermarket deck).

This will solve the problem of keeping the radio in the car and operational, but, you still need something for the chimes right? If you have an old speaker lying around i.e. a 4x6 in the door that you have taken outand want to put it to use, now is a good time. Use the left front speaker wires from the stock radio into the spare speaker and you are all set.

As for the aftermarket stereo, take a switched 12v from the fuse panel (Wipers) and use the ground that you split, and the speaker and illumination wires from the wire harness. You're done!

I'll post a diagram soon too incase i really confused everyone (Sorry if i did), but its really not that complicated.

i would have sold you my relocation harness for 40 bucks, lmao.

they also make a harness with a chime, and you don't have to relocate your deck.

Yeah, but ya know what. This works out alot better for some people who dont have a credit card to buy online, who dont want to pay alot of money for a stupid harness, who want to keep thier factory deck in the car just incase of warranty etc. and for people who just like to do things themselves and like messing around with this kinda stuff. I was just putting it out there for people like me.

OK while we are on this topic I today was searching for an answer from an audio shop on installing my Eclipse deck.

Now the problem I've found out is that when you use the $12.00 version then if GM tries to find out what your car problem is while sitting out on the highway getting a road side assistance they can't use the GM tools and get no codes from the computer because the factory deck controls some of the PCM stuff. Now he told me there is a kit the the extra computer stuff on it??????

Now I'm in Canada and Audio 2001 has the whole in-car adapter for $69.99 so if you are going to keep the radio in your car then there is a good place to buy it. Also the Car audio shop I went to told me for $120.00 I can have all the parts to install it myself... the dask kit and the nice in-car dual radio setup.

NOW HERE IS THE INTERESTING PART:::
I talked to anouther install place and they say the whole PCM issue is Bull and so I'm really more confused than I was before I started looking.

Bill, THEY ARE LIEING TO YOU!!!!! the only thing that goes throught the radio is the audio. thats it. trust me. i am using the 2001 chevy tracker harness and i have no problems whatsoever. i have had my codes checked at Autozone and at my local dealership and i have never had a problem. all you need is the 2001 Chevy Tracker harness and a flush mount kit for the deck, some speaker wire and you are set. since you probably have the premium audio, you will have to run new speaker wire to the rear speakers to make them sound good. the fronts are no problem because they are not running of an amp.

also, read the second sticky at the top of the audio & electronics forum. this will have more answers to your questions.

Peace Out!!!

ya don't worry about anything take a look at Lenko's site and basicly J's are not affected by this diagnostic stuff because there isn't any thing like that in out radios, but if look at the impalas they are different. (oil life, maintence check, etc)

hmm..i wonder if anyone that has taken the stock radio out wrecked their car. if the airbags didnt go off that sure would suck

I've seen quite a few at the wreckers with aftermarket radios, and blown bags.

I've been saying it since 2000... these so-called "professional installers" don't know what they're talking about, because they just repeat the BS that the sales guys tell them.

i wish ppl would understand that the airbags dont go through the stock radio. the airbag module is under the passenger seat carpet. why would that be there if the airbags went through the radio???

Peace Out!!!
