9887 is great. You dont need the imprint for it. Most of the imprint features are built in IIRC.

I have the 9886. I likes it a lot.

Its great. I just wish I had more EQ adjustability without having to buy Imprint. The iPod interface is excellent. Actually the main reason I picked it up and it turned out to sound great too. For the little more extra I wish I wouldve gotten the 9887.

for sound equipment there is not a better idea. what sounds good to me or sundown may sound like garbage to you and vice versa

I have had both brands of headunits. I prefer alpine over pioneer. Alpine made the stocks sound so much better.

there are so many variables. listening is the best way, just make sure you can listen with similar settings. meaning same type speakers same power (when asked which one sounds better to a person like 75% of the time people will choose the one that is louder)

i prefer my sq headunit to do one thing and thats play clean music, i prefer it not have built in power. or really much in the form of eq abilities. i always amp my speakers so onboard power is just a waste. and i usually always have an external eq. just give me a clean signal.

Alpine has the ability to turn the internal amp off which id nice and lessens the possibility for clipping in the signal.

I didnt know that.... Good feature

I know the Pioneer Premier I was looking at before I got the 9886 had that option.

i have had both and i would lean a little bit towards pioneer because they have higher voltage pre outs which translates to a cleaner and more powerful signal. but you have to be careful with pioneer decks not to set gains higher than 1/3 otherwise you'll clip your speakers.

So are you putting an oscilloscope on the pre-outs or just talking out of your ass? Higher voltage preouts doesnt necessarily mean a cleaner. I means it has a higher resistance to noise which is really a moot point nowadays since we arent running .5v and 2v preouts.

Anyways the highest level Pioneer and the 9887 both have 4v preouts. I know with power I/C turned off the 9886/9887 will go full volume without clipping.

Overall they make pretty much equal quality head units. I just prefer Alpine due to the ease of use. I cant stand the wobbly stick thing that Pioneer has gone to lately. Pain in the ass to use while driving (atleast for me) and the Pioneer I owned was impossible to navigate. I needed to break out the manual a few times just for basic functions. Whereas the Alpine is very user friendly.

When did they start that? I might have to look into that.

But anyways dont entirely rely on Imprint to do everything for you.

how the fcuk can you ever know if it was clipping or not? you must be one naive motha fcka if you think you can hear distortion unless you've used an oscilloscope and measured it, otherwise you just talking out of your ass.. anyway pioneer premier > alpine and as for ease of use you have to be really dumb not to understand how to use a deck. they're both good decks and have very similar specs, the rest is upto you, simple as that
