Need help building spl box for new dc audio 10"
Saturday, June 05, 2010 2:51 PM
Hi.
I recently bought a new 10" DC Audio LVL4. But I don't have the specs to build a new box for it, I just know how big it should be. My question is what is the best ported box design for SPL? Or if anyone else has a 10" single sub, and it hammers, post what kinda box you got. Thanks.

What amp are you running to it? Do you want a box that sounds good daily or one with an spl tune, or both?

Hey! I'm running a Power Acoustik to it. The sub is rated for 1k rms, and I will deliver 1.2K rms. I would like a good daily tune, but if i play a test tone I want it to absolutely pound. If i dont get this option, I would like to go for SPL. Old sub (Clarion) that I had only hit 136.7 when i metered it. Would like to hit over 140db with this one.

Only problem is if you tune to 42 hertz, it's going to sound like crap.

So what determines the tuning frequency? the shape of the port? or what?

Port length and diameter or width, depending on if it's round or rectangle.

Build a box for spl only...and a daily box seperate. As some of the other guys have said, can't get big numbers out of a daily box that sounds good. I had a box tuned to 45 that sounded ok and did decent numbers out of it.(148db) My opinion... Tune a spl box to 50htz and put a strong 2k to it and easly hit a 147+ depending on you electrical situation. I watched ppl drop a pre fab box and a pair of good 12s and a good 1500rms and do upper 40s all day tuned around 45htz...also use slot ports or aeroports. Build subs up port up slide it to the back of the trunk firing up, give it at least 1500 and play your peak, and upper 40s in your sleep!

You should be able to hit a 47 48 on a daily box. You can do that with crap subs,so what's so funny anton??

47's, obviiously not on a termlab legal.
Are we talking MECA numbers, or USACi?

a 'good numbers' box will be around cars frequency, so it really depends on where your car peaks at. Unless someone has done all the figuring in your car, you really can't say 50hz is your magical number. No generic frequency is for each car.

Now for a daily good sounding box, you'll want mid 30's ported. That much power though, be sure you have a SSF, or you'll be calling Rusty for a replacement.

Rule of thumb...j bodys peak low 50s I own a term lab and I've tested sunfires, cavis grand ams and most car of that size peak low 50. I assume on a jbody forum we are talking about a mid size car.btw 47s legal are cake...when I talk I'm talking usaci or midwest spl formats. Its not that hard if you know what you are doing to produce a legal unmanned 150 in the kick on a tl.

trust, more than aware of what Termlab metering is, as well as Steve Midwest format.
In the kick and on the dash are far different.

Yeah in my car its 2db on the dash I do a 151.1 and in the kick I do a 153.1
It was tough to make a 2 db diffrence between the both. Our time in testing proved the. Way to make your scores close from dash to kick is all in the wave, and how it gets to the meter.

I didn't do finals in miwest...I did usaci but yes I did basic 2 the 3 times I competed in midwest.

what number did you hit in basic 2? my guess is the first run you went WAY over power, second run you lost 3 db for turning it down... i run basic trunk. currently tied for 3rd with my daily tuned box to 34 hz and burping AT 34 hz as well.

basically all im saying, is why waste the time ot build an spl box only when all he wants is a box that will do good numbers and still be loud driving aorund daily. again OP i recomend you try out my box plans. 2 cubes with 35-40 sq of port and tune to 34 hz. you will be happy, you will beat guys with 2 12"s that think they are awesome! and thats what makes it all worth it.

AlsoKel Davis your sig is WAY too big.. please change it!

Kel, yea, saw in 2009 you did Adv 3 144.7 and Basic 2 130.7.

Steve has a good format.

A very fair and good format, somthing that doesnt cost tons of money to be able to compete at a national level.

is the origonal poster planning on competing in spl? if he doesnt then all this numbers stuff is bull@!#$, just call the manufacturer, explain what your wanting and ask them whats the best sized box for the application. if your not competing then who cares what number appears on a screen.
