Buying a setup this weekend , need suggestions!
Wednesday, March 17, 2010 5:52 PM
Hey guys.. So right now i'm piecing together a setup to install over the next couple weeks.. Right now this is what i have installed.

So as of now i have these alpine type S's in the doors and the same in 6x9's in the rear..

Now.. for the plans.. Trying to stay within budget with a decent setup heres my idea.. I own a 4 channel clarion amp with the following for specs

* Maximum Power Output 400W
* Continuous Average Power Output 200 Watts (50W x 4 Into 4 Ohms 20Hz-20kHz) Typical 2-Ohm Stereo 100W x 4
* Switchable Bass Boost Control 0dB/6dB/12dB
* Adjustable 50Hz-250Hz High-/Low-Pass Crossover
* Bridgeable 4-/3-/2-Channel Operation

So basically I'm nowhere close to knowledgeable in car audio , would this amp be a good choice to power my 4 alpine type s-s'?..

-------

Now for the subs. I'm looking to purchase 2 10" Alpine Type s subs from a local dealer..

Power Handling Max
900 Watts

Power Handling Nominal
300 Watts

With the following alpine amp --

Total Max Power 500W x 1

14.4V Dynamic Power At 2 Ohms 500W x 1

2 OHM Output Power - Full Range 500W

4 OHM Output Power - Full Range 300W x 1

-----

Now i have seen someone using this Amp and Sub combo on a video but never herd it personally , would this amp in your opinion be much to small to power these subs? Sorry for the general question like i said i dont know much about a proper audio setup. Any suggestions would be great!

What are they selling that stuff for? I am willing to bet I could get you into better gear in the same price range. Type-S stuff is kinda low end. If you are happy with the speakers you already bought and are ONLY looking to buy a sub and amp, that's fine and I won't be here to push you to replace speakers you already have replaced, but I can definitely help you A. Learn more about car audio in general if there are more questions you ever have, and B. Help you get into better gear in your price range. Remember, buying something more flexible, better over all, and longer lasting means replacing it a lot less frequently.

If youre dead set on Alpine Id go Type R since theres quite a bit of a quality jump there.

BUT definitely get back in touch on here about finding other places to buy. It scares me to think what a local shop will charge you for a Type-R lol.

hey guys , I was originally trying to decide between a single 12" type r or the 2 10" type s. Right mow they're selling both type s in a box for 299$ and that amp I specified is 199$. The alpine type r is going for 279$ without a box. I don't know why I said local dealer I should have just said future shop and we all know most times they don't know what they're talking about. Last time I was there looking at the 2 type s"s he was trying to
convince me I needs to buy the 1000 watt alpine v power amp
to power them which was going for 539$ ..

Thanks for the replies.

WOW their prices are insane. $500 for 2 entry level subs and an amp to power them CAN be beat...

Here, I will get a box price from the guy I deal with. Custom built, solid, sturdy, done RIGHT not some pre-fabbed pile of @!#$. And check woofersetc.com for the price on a single 12" Type-R. Then find the amp on there as well. I am willing to bet it will all fall together cheaper or similar in price, and will be a much more reliable, better sounding, and all around better sub for you.

12 inch Type Rs go for like 140 or 150 on eBay. The warranty isnt thorough but Ill take the risk.

If Alpine is a must:
SUB: http://www.woofersetc.com/p2529/SWR1242D--Alpine-12"-TypeR-1500-Watt-Dual-4Ohm-Subwoofer.htm
AMP: http://www.woofersetc.com/p6249/MRPM500--Alpine-Mono-500W-subwoofer-amplifier.htm
Total before shipping: $310

The guy who does enclosures for me would build a nice ported box for that sub for about $160 shipped. MAYBE a little less, but I doubt it.

In that price range, if you are open to A. Buying used, and B. not buying just Alpine, and C. Not needing to purchase this stuff today so you can have a day or 2 to really find the right deals, I can help you get into better gear.

If you got any more questions, keep em coming. Good to have someone educated and lead into buying quality gear that will last and they will love for years rather than letting you go at it blindly and get @!#$ on prices of stuff that isn't going to satisfy you for long.

Also, as always, if you are within reasonable driving distance from Omaha, I offer installations, tuning, hands on tuning advice and guidance so you can make sure to ensure the longevity of your stereo components, and any other car related services(unless you have a 00 Cougar and want an alternator swapped. Then you can go @!#$ yourself lol).

So wow.. First off I just wanna say I'm
posting off my phone so I haven't been able to closely read everything but this deals are insane compared to what our local dealers are pricing their equipement. So
from my understanding that type r is 129.99$ and 19.99$ for shipping?? I'm
from N.B Canada I just hope they ship here for the same price because if they do I'm placing an order like now.. Tommorow.. 10 minutes ago. 129.99 sounds much nicer then 299.99$. Thank you very much for
introducing me to this site. Il look at it
closer when I get home but this
looks very promising , although I might go
with the 10" type r instead!

Just from previous experiences. you will have a duty fee that your not going to like at all. haha

I baught a $300 dollar amp, shipping was alright, but the duty was $69. I dont understand why Canada doesnt sell anything cool. Except for Maple Syrup that is

also remember its easy to sell things cheap on the internet when you dont have to have a store, or salesmen or any other added costs that actual brick and mortar business have.

its better to have 1 quality sub versus 2 mediocre subs. spend your money on quality not quantity.

and yeah jl is a whore.

So basically I'm looking at 315.30 CAD .. And i know nothing about duty fee's etc as i rarely buy anything online.. Will i have to pay " Aprox " 60$ for each item or just 60$ to receive both? It would still work out to be cheaper either way but I'm just curious.. It's summer now and im all excited to get some bass but i dont wanna rush into anything .. I suppose if i have to wait 3 weeks for shipping to save 150$ it would be worth it in the end..

And to clarify .. If i get the 10" Type R with that amp specified will that amp have enough power to push that sub decently , or should i just get a 10" Type S with that amp? Whadya think?

Thanks for helpin me out !

That amp will have plenty of power to get plenty out of a 10" Type-R. I don't think you understand that power handling is NOT the ONLY thing that separates the subs. Moving down to a Type-S you are moving to less excursion, worse sound, lower quality parts, just an all around cheaper sub. That's the main reason I recommended bumping up to the Type-R. MUCH better all around piece of equipment.

Well.. Instead of going with the Type S's like i freaking wanted i ended up being sold this current setup which im running now..

The clarion is powering by 4 alpine Type S speakers.. So i bought a wiring kit and did everything " Properly " it pounds very nicely.. The amp is bridged and im using 4ga power and ground. My current issue is under heavy load the amp keeps " Shutting off " .. If i watch the amp when i really crank on the volume it'll " Flicker " off then back on... I dont get it! .. I did a load test on my battery and it showed " very good " .. I dont have the settings cranked by any means.. the amp setting are barely turned half way on the gain and bass boost. The amp and sub are matched and sold the way i got it.. So it cant be some sorta compatibility issue.. The amp is rated at 300 rms " Bridged " and the sub is also rated at 300rms. The only way i can explain it un-technically is it seems as though the Amp is demanding more then it can receive when under load. Any suggestions?.. Ive checked the ground..

Where are you grounding your amp and how good is that connection?
