Alpine 50w-4

Hey...I am getting this head unit from best buy. It is a pretty sweet deal i wanted to point it out seeing as the sale ends Saturday and I imagine its at all Best Buys the link for it is here (hopefully i made it right). Alpine 50W-4.

One thing though...it said it was not compatable with my 98 z24. So I think to myself how can it possibly not work? Well, this guy there tells me I need a $100 harness (i assume a T-harness) and they would be happy to install it all for me. I am going to be installing it myself when i get a chance but i did want to kind of double check. One of the sticky's had said its 2000 and newer that have a problem similar to what the guy said. Is it at all possible that I will run into that problem with my 98 z24. And please i would rather not hear "anything is possible"

the only reason you would buy that $100 harness for your car is to keep your door chimes. if you don't care about the chimes, you're perfectly fine going with a regular $12 harness.
on your gen of j-body, the BS about airbags is a myth.

But the post at the top of the forum says that its 2000 and newer so does that need to be changed to include older cars like mine? Also, could I get a like a name of this harness or something so that i can buy one if need be. A link to one would even be cool.

There is no $100 harness that you need to install it in your '98. The '98 doesn't interface with the chimes at all. You can just buy the standard $10 harness from Walmart or wherever and you will be fine.

Most WalMarts sell the Scosche brand... You need the GM02B harness, the antenna adapter, and a dash kit.

you are 100% wrong. And it's not just because I have installed head units in numerous J's, but I actually OWNED an 02. I know you are wrong here man.

Probably 00-05 cause of the BCM PCM thing as opposed to the 95-99 PCM thing right?

Well ok...so i got the stuff i worked till 10:30 last night and started at 6 this morning so no real time to do much but i did manage to get the top half of my dash up. Let me run this by you guys....i believe the is the right sequence of things to be installed. The harness in the car plugs into the scosce brand harness. Then, that harness gets spliced into the mini harness that come with the head unit. Then just plug the rest of the stuff in and enjoy.

Well, last night i was looking at the scosce harness and the one for the head unit...they all match up down to one wire. The scosce is a blue wire labled like dash lights or something and the corresponding wire on the head unit harness is smaller and i think green with a black stripe. Does anyone know exactly where i am going wrong or perhaps i didn't buy the right harness but it's the only one that says it will fit.

PS. I bought the separate antenna adapter only to find that it came with the new harness =)

Apparently no one has problems with installing head units pre 2000 it looks like...I guess i am just making this difficult.

Green/ black is a speaker wire.

well it is installed....much much easier than i thought it would be...only one thing. The mounting package i got looks retarded...its the same box as the new one i got but its completely wrong. Looks like it belongs in a 80 something buick wood grain sticking out 3 inches. But I already have the new one so thats goin in after work.

You need chimes to know when ur hjeadlights are on? Yikes, I would look into a multi-vitamin for memory. They don't make one for common sense though.

Back in my day nothing dinged when your headlights were on. Hell I didn't even run with doors on my CJs. 95-99 doesn't lose chimes, 2000+ does, hence the module.

Your car may do 13 sec @ 103 mph, but my car does 146db @ 35 hz.
