somethin new

Keep in mind that what covers the spare tire is just a piece of cardboard that is about 3/8" and the carpet. Ok so last night i got bored and decided to try out somethin new. I took out the piece of cardboard and carpet that covers the spare tire in my 2000 cav. I then took my 10" pioneer sub out of my box and cut a hole in the center of the piece that lays over where the spare tire would be and dropped the sub in there lol. I hooked it all up and turned it on and to my surprise.....it works and sounds very nice. The only problem is that the sub weighs down that peice and so i need to make it more sturdy. Any ideas on how i should go about this? Should i just keep it propped up with some little pieces of wood? Put somethin else under the cardboard? what?

Use MDF.

make sure you seal it up, i will suggest laying poly down in the spare tire well and grab some fibergalss and resin and get at it, and like sundown said use mdf 3/4", for looks i would go under the cover.

oh and you will need some dampening material, i took out my spare tire one time and it sounded just god awfull when i was outside the car horrible rattling sounds, so lay some deadener down, then fiberglass ontop of it (with poly in between).

poly? Like polyfill? WHY? That makes no @!#$ sense, Anton...

What you will want to do is cover the spare tire well completely with tin foil. Make sure there are no holes or spaces. Tape all the seams with masking tape. Then do the resin/mat/resin etc. process with fiberglass. That way you have essentially made a mold of your spare tire well with a sturdy material that can easily be sealed off. Make a copy of your spare tire cover with MDF or a high quality plywood like birch. Trim to fit perfectly, then you take your new fiberglass floor mold and attach it to your new spare tire cover board. if you make a good enough lip on the mold, you can screw it to the bottom side of it, then fiberglass it to make it strong and air tight. There you have a sealed enclosure for your sub.

ok my god, in the construction buisiness they call plastic covering poly, so i said to lay plastic down, if you go into menards or home depot or any where else and say wheres your poly? they will dirct you to a roll of plastic covering. its what you use for after you insulate your house, you staple some poly on the studs after insulation so you get rid of any drafts.

and straight from wikipedia: "Polyethylene, polyurethane and polyester, all forms of plastic polymers"

and a link to poly in home depot you could probly get it cheaper/ less of it then this much.

but you said exactly what i was trying to say, but i didnt go into that much detail.

I misunderstood your use of the abbreviation "poly". Forgot to do my home remodeling and maintenance homework before replying in the car audio forum. I know what a polymer is, I know what polyurethane is. "Poly" is not a term I ever associated with those thing. Plastic sheeting? MAYBE, Poly? nope. Like I said, not into home remodeling.

Anton check the little metal piece that the tire tie down screws into. It just sits on the mount and vibrates like crazy. I had to tape mine up.

Yeah definitely don't leave it like you have it now. It has potential to sound great in that spot and keep trunk space freed up, but do it right man. spend some time finding out the best way, with your personal skills, that you can seal that off and give the sub an enclosure.

Id invest in a subwoofer grill too. So you dont punch a hole in your cone with something that in the trunk

I figured if he used his trunk to haul things, that was a given lol. But yeah. JL Audio makes some very sturdy metal grilles that you could look into. They completely protect the sub from anything larger than a mosquito lol.

Should fit any sub with a rubber gasket around it. They are strong grilles!

ha good luck going that extreme lol. That guy has a lot of time invested in that install. It came out looking great too. Last I saw him on here though, he was being a completely cocky douchebag.

if you just follow the building of the box on there you should be fine, he did pretty much what we're saying.
