is something wrong?

ok here is the issue, when playing certain songs my subs seem like they burp or something, it sounds awful. I am running two 12" rockford fosgate P2 subs in the rockford fosgate ported box with some cheap amp, scorsh or something like that. I am not a noob at car audio I just have been away from it for a long time (just got out of the army and looking to get back into it). It is a "600 watt" amp but it is only pushing about 150RMS i think. Is there any way that I can make these sound any better? I know you guys will probably say dump the subs and amp but I got them cheap. $50 cheap lol. anyway any opinions would be appreciated. thanks.

Next question, when I go to but a new setup I have been hearing alot about the XXX subs, who makes them? are they good? what kind of box are they made for? What amp should I get with them? I am looking to get 15s maybe 3 of them if I can get them to fit in a 97 2 door cavalier. Anyway guys thanks for any feedback.

Not sure on your first question, but as for the XXX, I know of 2 companies that make them. Soundstream, and RE. RE's is a SQ sub that can still get very loud. Soundstream's is more of an SQL sub, sounds alright and can get REAL loud, if you can feed it the power it requires. the Soundstream likes ported, and I think the RE can be used in either ported or sealed. Both have 4 digit MSRPs but can be found for cheaper if you look around and are in the right place at the right time. Also the soundstream is only a 15 for now supposedly an 18 is coming, but we will see, and the RE comes in 10,12,15, and 18.

not all sound stream subs a SQL most of the sound stream subs a SPL. we ran 2 12" sound stream tarantula with a sound stream xxx 6500 watt amp and was hitting 149.0 DBs

as for your first question, there are a few solutions:

- your amp might be clipping
- you may have a damaged surround
- might have a loose wire
- plastic bags near the subs? its happened to me before.

could be clipping, subs could be bottoming out during periods of super low bass (ie, playing well below the tuning frequency of the enclosure), could also be that your enclosure doesn't have enough port area and what you're hearing is "chuffing" or port noise.

When it comes to the XXX, you have to tell us which XXX you're talking about.

Resonant Engineering makes them. The 2005 and older models are different than the 06+ models. Both are SQL subs. They can sound very good, but there are better and cheaper subs for pure SQ.
The Soundstream XXX is an SPL sub.

If you're looking at 15s, you'll have to get super creative fitting 3 of them in the trunk. I had a bitch of a time getting 2 DD9515s to work decently in the trunk of my Z24 (just didn't have the space for proper port area, gave up and went with 1-15 as it ended up being louder). Going with a wall would be the most straightforward way of installing three.
The new XXXs don't require gigantic space to work well, but you'll be hardpressed to find room for 2 of those monsters in the trunk, plus required port area (if going ported), plus batteries etc required to properly feed it.

If it was my money and I wanted a trunk install, I'd go with a single ported 15, or a pair of 12s. Just be prepared to spend a small fortune on the electrical, as they are all power-hungry.

OT: UH Savage, are you from CAF or CA??

But yes, I agree with him. On all counts.

Used to be on CA a few years ago (can't remember my old handle there, probably Savage), but I avoid CAF like the plague. Not a big fan of the e-thugging by people who don't truly know what they're talking about. I do spend quite a bit of time on RoE (Savage), CCA (Unholysavage), and lurk around soundpressure and TP. Not on j-body much these days as I didn't compete at all this past summer, but used to be a regular here a while ago. Trying to get here more often, as there aren't as many @sshats here as compared to RoE and CA lol! (although RoE seemed to be getting a little better in past months).

I should mention that the new RE XXX is huge, with huge mounting depth. That will really limit your options when it comes to trunk installation. Doable yes, but you will be forced to get a bit more creative if you go with the 06+ versions. Their sheer size makes things just a bit more difficult.
