Ok i'm a newb to the J-body's and I finally got my hands on a sub and amp. Im running a Orion Sub and Amp combo and for some reason when im sitting in my car and my trunk is open my sub sounds around twice as loud. Not that this really matters to me but my curiousity to know why has caused me to ask. Is there some kind of sound principle going on here or am I thinkin too much on this one? It does not matter if my backseat is folded down or not it still happens. Is it due to the fact that the sound is cancelling out in my trunk but yet when its open the cancellation effect doesnt happen. Sorry if this has been discussed before, rip away if u feel the need. (mind you I did some searching and didnt find the info i was lookin for)
what way is your sub facing....into the cab or toward the back of the trunk?
you prolly have the cone of the sub facing the inside of the car...turn it around and face the cone to the back of the car magnet towards the inside of the car
lot of guys gain 6 tenths by popping the trunk open when competing. My car doesn't like it though.

my cavi is just as loud ith trunk open or closed...If you seal the front of the box(facing foward) off from the trunk the sound has only one place to go...in

yes, but if you face the sub, or port in some cases like my bandpass, you can actually use the trunk as "another box" in a way. it can in many cases improve the sound.
i would try to turn it around and see what sounds better to you.
The front of the box is sealed off from the trunk all of the sound has no place to go...plus mine is a vented enclosure tuned to the resonant frequency of the vehicle. un sealing or turning the box would not be in my best interest
Welcome to the wide wide world of cancellation.
i really hope you aren't talking to me....
no but if you are tuned to the resonant frequency of the vehicle it must not be for daily. or do you mean tuned to peak at the res Frequency of the vehicle.
In a Bas Reflex(vented) enclosure the FC (tuning frequency) is your peak freq. of the enclosure.
a vented enclosure is going to peak still. not at the tuning you should actually have the least movement at the tuning and the peak will have the most excursion.
wrong...trust me the peak happens at the tuning frequency
alright i will try turning my sub around see what I prefer, thanks for the info guys
Think of a bandpass box a sealed box with a ported box infront of it so to speak, now think of your trunk, sealed box inside another box (trunk) with a big port (open truck lid) your having cancellation issues. although you never stated what type of box and where its positioned. its most likely not that your bass gets louder but more like its cancelling out less. allot of times you can figure in the car itself to work with the box so this doesnt happen.

just to let you know a ported box peak's 4-6db's above what it's tuned to (in 90% of install's)
do you even know what the resonant frequency of a j-body is? like Nate said if its tuned to that then your going to peak higher and it will sound like $hit daily

If your subs were tuned to the resonance frequency of your car, the car would vaporize as all the molecules would seperate from the vibrations...
I think he means tuned to the center frequency of the cabin gain.
/me just sits back and smiles. If my box was tuned to our resonant frequency, it would sound like ass, like baby jesus clubbing a seal. It would be ok for burps, but I don't want to burp every day. I want 3 6 shaking my colon. And my box is tuned at 36 hertz, it peaks at around 41, 42 hertz. We could both have identical tunings for our box, but I could be running 6 cubes and you're running 8 cubes and there's going to be different peaks. I could have a flat response, a 3 db drop at 31-34 hz, then a 6db peak from 40-45 hz. Gets even louder with the windows cracked, which goes back to the original poster. I have a big bastard box in my trunk, firing rear, subs up, and I get cancellation. Once i crack the window, waves have somewhere to go instead of destructing themselves and i gain 2 db, and it hurts. I love the hurt

But anyways most people who rear fire their boxes don't have this problem because their box and subs are on the same plane, but mine aren't, and things get confused until i crack that window.
