Box Building
Friday, March 30, 2007 4:16 PM
Ok so now I got my new wiring and now I need to build my new box. It's going to be a sealed design with a piece in the center to make it 2 chambers that measure 2 cubic feet each. My question is what are the measurements needed if i were to design this box? Also I am planning to use 1/2" MDF with 1" brad nails. Any comments?

What subs are you using? I dont think 1/2 mdf is enough for any decent sub, go 3/4. And also dont nail you will just split the mdf. You need to use screws and predrill

nails + glue work fine. And yea, I'd go with 3/4 MDF as well. And seriously, figure out the dimensions for yourself. It's the most basic math, even a grade 6'er could do it. Length x Width x Height = Volume. Don't forget that the wood has thickness and your woofer has displacement as well. Sealed boxes are the easiest things in the world to design, good luck.

divide by 1728 to get volume in cubic feet

ok so i will use 3/4" but will brad nails hold it all together? or will my subs blow it apart? they are audiobahn natural sound 12" 's.
yeah i know math ain't that hard i'm just having a brain fart right now so can someone tell me what my measurements need to be to make 2 2 cubic foot chambers in 1 box?

34" wide 16" high x 18"deep will give you a hair over 4 cubes + driver displacement

actually that will give you 4.39 drivers should take up .25 which leaves you .14 for bracing

thank you

yes...its the glue that holds it together, the nails just hold it in place till the glue dries(i learned that from a smart smart man on here)

so will just regular hot glue do it? sorry if i am asking stupid questions i have never built a box before.

No, use wood glue.

use gorilla glue trust me on that .

audiobahn recommends 2 cubes including driver displacement, per sub.

So make two boxes, 12 x 12 x 12 internal dimension and screw em together!!

You slippin? 12 x 12 x 12 = 1 cube brother. 12 x 12 x 24?

For the sake of a more square, trunk-fitting box, I'd do 16x16x14. This will give you just over the 2 cubic feet per sub, not taking into account driver displacement, or the thickness of the MDF, but it should get you damned close.

I would also recommend using screws to hold it together. Yes, nails will hold it together while the glue dries, but not necessarily as tight as it could be. The screws will keep it very tight while the glue dries, and they will help in the long run to keep it tight. Make sure you use plenty of wood glue, even if it squishes out of the seams. You can always wipe it off, or cut it off with a razor blade after it dries.

nails will do fine... everyone who said its the glue is correct. get some good glue and nails will be fine... the nails or screws are essentialy just acting as a vice holding the wood together while the glue cures.

On the other hand....you have other fingers.

I just bought a 20 inch widescreen ultrasharp flat pannel..I'm going to have to subscribe to the high quality porn places now......damn

To prove the virtues of wood, I built a stool in highschool shop class and it was held together with glue only. It could hold up me and three of my buddies.

so build two of em, lol.

either way, it's a REALLY easy box, there isn't much to it.

Ya but if audiobahn says 2 cubes per sub.... Wouldn't he need 4 cubes total? Or am I reading that wrong and just confuzzeling myself

I meant build two of the connecting box contraptions. just forget it, lol.
