Hi,
First off I did read the FAQ's but still want to double-check on what will happen if I change my deck on my '01 Z24?
On Sat I went to change my deck and I was told that I'd need a $69.00 harnes where I would have the door/ light chime but would not be able to trouble shoot my car and I'd have to keep my factory deck to the trunk incase I needed to trouble shoot it at the GM for service.
If I bought a $150 kit I was told I wouldn't have to keep my deck in the trunk and the dealor would then be able to trouble shoot/ diagnose my computer if/ when needed.
Can someone please clear up what I need to change my deck?
Thank You for any help
i just swapped out my 00 z-24 radio for a dvd player and monitor on sat i lost my chimes but who cares right. what i bougt was a antenna adapter, radio wire harness, deck mounting kit (theres 3 styles) at walmart for 40 and some change. i put it in myself and then had my cousin who does mechanic work check on a engine light that had been on for a week or so and he was able to read every thing and find out everything with the new head unit in no stocker un the trunk no expensive kit just the 40 something cost for the walmart kit and my stuff is just like if the stocker was in there cept the door chimes but like i said i dont care a bout them anyways. some one also a while back said my friend would not beable to swap head units for hiss navagation they said he would lose his drls and his airback system well those installers were idiots cause we put the nav in and his drls light up every time he drives and his air bags are still ready to deploy if needed so u see what i mean. so from my experiance my install was a succes just loseing the door chimes. have fun
THE ONLY THING related to the radio is your door chimes.
MYth:
DRL
Check engine light
ODBI 2 scanner - the troubleshooting he was talking about
air bags
Are all myths are unrelated to swapping out the radio. You can buy the cheaper harness and loose only chimes or spend the extra money to keep the chimes. If you you read the FAQ and the sticky this would have been explained clearly.
thanks guys.
i have one of wallmarts deck kits but i didn't see the wiring kit. at least at the store near me.
thay had gm wiring kits, but my car was not on the back of the package listed.
do they have a wiring kit for my '01 and how much?
an the antenna adaptor?
thanks
the adaptor is about 6 bucks if i recall correctly and yes there is a wire harness is 00-05 and works, all earlier year im not sure about. walmart should have a guide in the audio department it is the same price as the other harness when u look in the guide have customer service order it the harness could also be listed under pontiac sunfire. its like i think 15 or so. the antenna adaptor is needed because the gm antenna is half the size of the one on the back of your aftermarket head unit this adaptor will plug into the new radio and then u plug ur gm in to that and it will size the two together other wise no am/fm working. it is like id say 3-4 inches long black and a male on oneside and female conn on the other. they do sell all three peices yet may take a walmart or two yet custmer service can get it for u. i believe i got all the info to help you on this.
thanks lots fot your help!!!
If I remember correctly its the scosche GM035 Harness that works. It doesn't say 00-05 Cavalier but it should say 00 Trail Blazer. Search for the information and you will find it on the forum. I just installed my car stereo for under $20 this last weekend and its working great.

if anyone knows the harness/ adapter number and where to get it please post it
I'm using the Scosche GM-035 as well... $10 at Wal-Mart or Canadian Tire... you pick
It doesn't list Cavalier, but it works. Your door chimes won't, but that's all you have to worry about.
J-body cars don't use the deck to service anything. Some other GM cars do, but not Cavaliers or Sunfires.
thanks John and nice car by the way!
go to FUTURESHOP if you live in canada and buy a harness for your deck
i bought one its 11.99$ cdn
plug your stock harness into it and that to your deck and your good to go
I was reading on one of the threads here about having to run a line to tap into a switched power source on some of the cars. If I get teh GM-035 kit, am I going to have to run other wires also in my 05 Sunfire?
i got the gm-035 from sosche also. it even comes with the antenna adaptor. It set me back a whole $8.19 with tax at walmart. im using it in a 2006 silverado though but it is the same plug. I also have the metra harness that lets you keep your chimes and that thing is F*&^ing annoying.(too loud)
Oh yea i diddent see your question above you will just need to run a switched 12v (acc wire) You can get it off your wiper fuse. You will also lose the ability to sit in the car without the key and listen to the radio untill the door opens- but that can be fixed with a couple relays
Oh well I don't mind the radio turning off once I take the key out. It'll be easier to just find that wiper fuse and go off of that. Not really looking forward to doing that, though. Darn it, why can't they make these things simple?
well if i had my car i could get you a pic. But its in the shop

its should be labled. You can buy a fuse tap for around $6 at a local auto parts store. But i just jammed my wire in then put the fuse back in.
Sounds like my best bet is to get a fuse tap, then run a fused line from that to the radio. What size wire/fuse is best to run?
well the fuse tap is going to use the existing fuse. Im doing that on a 10 amp fuse and no problems and im running 18 gauge wire to the acc.
BTW you need a mini atc fuse tap
Ok, looks simple enough. If I put a fuse tap in there, I should just be able to run a wire behind that panel and under & around to the stereo without too much trouble. I hope.
I wanted to add to this. The wiring harness you need to keep the door chimes intact and have the ACC work is made by scosche and they sell it at wal-mart and Meijer. I found one at Meijer for only $49.99... I just decided it would be cheaper just to put a stock deck in
