I went to circuit city to start pricing out a system for my cavalier and the guy told me I would have to pay $100 extra for some module that is required in order for air bags and other @!#$ to work. Can anyone tell me what this module is and if anyone has one I could get for significantly lower than circuit citys price?

go read the sticky. there is a special wire harness you can use that costs 100 bucks. but all it does is keep your factory door chimes. if you don't care about the door chimes, get a wire harness for a 2000 trailblazer. it'll work the same, you just won't have door chimes and you'll have to run an ignition wire from your new stereo to the fuse box.
GO PATS!!!
and tell the installer that he's a flat out liar. i hate circuit city installers.
he's not technically a liar. in order to keep everything functioning properly, that 100$ wire harness is the easiest way to go. its just not absolutely necessary.
GO PATS!!!
go to walmart and find the scosche GM radio replacement interface for about $30 it will keep ur door chimes, if u cant find one i might be able to help u get one

At the same time though, the harness has nothing to do with the airbags.
I'd be more likely to spend $100 for my airbags to function properly, than I would just to have door chimes.
For that $100 I'll make sure myself that I have my keys and the lights are turned off each time I exit the car, as really that's all you're paying for.
I had the same bull crap fed to me when I was looking for a deck. I went to several places. One place fed me some bull@!#$ about needing the T-harness to relocate my deck otherwise nothing would work and the others told me pretty much the same @!#$ except for the module. I finally talked to someone who knew what they were talking and ended up getting the module after being told what it's for.

actually if he said you need it for the airbags to work then he lied, the question is. is he lying or is he just telling the customer what his manager told him to say.

probably what his manager told him to say. when i went to get my tracker harness at circuit city, i told the guy flat out, "i know it won't blow my air bags, i'll just lose my chimes, what harness do i need?" he didn't bs me and just gave me the cheap harness..
GO PATS!!!
I installed an elclipse cd 8000 head unit just modifing the harness that came with it and my door chimes and everything work. I havn't had a problem with anything yet.

Reason why they don't bypass stuff is legal reasons man... if you installed it with the tracker harness, and for some odd reason the airbags didn't blow (which probably wont' happen) and somebody got hurt/died.... you'd be out of a job and the company you work for would be out lots o $$$.
Just like I can't bypass the video parking brake on in-dashes or even let customers know you can or I'll get fired...

There is NO PROBABLY about it, THE AIRBAG SYSTEM AND THE RADIO HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH EACH OTHER IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM, so it is NOT A possability at all. End of Story.
Agreed, airbags will not be affected with the removal of the factory radio. You will have no chimes or warning alarms.
-locdizzel, could you get me the part number for the scosche GM radio replacement interface? cheapest I can find it is $79.

It's America... you can sue anybody for anything. If you rear ended someone with a tracker harness going 5 miles an hour and you hit your head on the steering wheel, chh... that's a cool million from whoever installed the stereo because people do that kinda crap. It's a liability issue even though we KNOW it won't happen. Just like why CC and BB are NOT allowed to tap into the windshield wiper fuse, we MUST find another 12V switched and tap into that, fusing it.
not nessicary. if lenko can dig up the proper info im sure the layers for c.c. or b.b. could just as easily present the proof needed. its called the box stores just being to lazy to do any research.
if im worried about being sued i surely wouldnt tell my staff to lie to every customer and tell them they need a 100$ cable versus a 10$ cable. that seems more chance of a lawsuit then the airbag situation.

i knew there was something wrong when he told me that. So the truth is, I dont need this module, because I dont care about my door chimes. But do I go back and tell them its not needed. Or do I go somewhere else?

Bestbuy sells the 20$ harness for a 03-05 cavalier, and all you loss is the door chimes...End of story.

Go to Wal-Mart. Buy the Scosche GM-035 adapter for $10.
It's just the chimes, man. Always has been, for 00-05 J-cars. Same as most GM cars now, actually. They're just spewing head office "make more money for the company" propoganda.

Lenko..this Scosche GM-035 adapter will allow the factory chimes to be heard? It didn't bother me when I first got my radio installed, but having the battery die 7-8 times because i left the headlights on is kind of annoying

Nope... the $100 adapter is what you need. Or look at your car before you leave it.... or just buy a Yellow Top

I leave my lights on all the time... Yellow Top never dies!

Doesn't mean that they would win. And who ever gets in a car accident and then someone says "HEY YOU!, What WIRING HARNESS does your CD PLAYER HAVE ON IT!? "

Ok so here is the reason why CC and BB and some audio shops push the Metra bus harnesses. It is because of the Data 2 Bus system that GM employs on all of their newer cars and some older models. GM has the stock radio become the main link in communication with most of the onboard "convenience and safety" features. The radio becomes the main link for the ABS, Oil life monitor, Airbag systems warning light but will not effect depolyment, door locks etc. But Sunfires and Cavaliers are not effected by any of this if the stock radio is removed. The only thing that will be lost in the Sunfire or Cavalier will be like said before, the warning chimes, onstar (if equipped), XM, and sometimes, the ability to run the radio with the car off and key removed for 15minutes, and have the radio shut off on its own when you open the car door. Nothing to sweat tho, now if we owned any other type of GM vehicle that has the Data 2 bus, the harness would be required. Its just poor education by the heads of the Road and Audio shops at CC and BB. The propbably just tell them that if it is a GM model they need to use the harness. If you want to learn more about the Data 2 bus interface click the link below.
