I just picked up a 12" JL audio W7 and im going to build a FG box for it but i want to mount it (inverted) ?? i think thats right but if not then i mean like this
so my question is will it not sound as good? is there anything special i should know before i do it like.. a best way to aim the sub, things like that? Or should i just mount it normal and be happy?
thanks
should sound fairly the same. Might get a little bit lower, as the box will appear slightly larger to the subwoofer due to the speaker not displacing air in the box.
Another factor is that you might hear air venting out the drivers vent pole and other cooling areas. Not the coolest sound.
I have done it to a few drivers. Just becuase it looked good. But ide say keep it non inverted for the W7.

the rear of the sub moves just as much air as the front, just make sure your polarity is correct, you'll be pulling instead of pushing.
Should sound the same.

Umm inverting a w7 might be abit tuff unless you mount it firts then build the box over it..doesnt the suround go over the screws? phil

2 good points, but I have never really run into a situation where going bigger made a noticable difference in sound. If the box is sealed, you should be fine as long as the dimensions are relatively close. $.02.

if i invert the sub then i will make it so the bottom of the box is removable. if i don't then i wont worry about it
thanks guys keep any suggestions coming
uh, yes the box will be larger, but you aren't putting it into an already built box, so that can be factored in.
otherwise, you won't notice any difference, especially in a trunk

If its just the one sub then your fine... but if you have more than one sub in an enclosure.. the polarity on the inverted sub has to be reversed.. otherwise the subs will cancel each other out and you wont move any air at all.
Mechanical noise won't be a facotor is he's running it in the trunk...

you want to bump, then they will bump and hit real hard and a lot good.
LOL
Well, I was thinking that if he's building a fancy moulded enclosure that he might end up having it open at shows.............
Maybe I'm just crazy.

^^^^ LOL so true
thanks guys i think you answered all my questions
and of course i will post pics during and after i build it
I've had my subs inverted for close to 4 years now. Mine sounds awesome. I had one guy tell me that i'm loosing some sound having them that way. But I cant tell. To it looks SO much sicker
I was doing a isobaric set up with 4 10's back in 1991. Back of a camaro and people thought I had two 12's or one 15' sub.
I say do it and tell us how it turned out. i don't think you would be disappointed.
when i had my wall with the 4 15's we inverted 2 of them, it doesn't change the sound as bass is non directional and the only problem i had with any noise is the plastic covers on the magnets rattled a lil bit

im sure that wasnt the only thing rattling lol
LOL same thing i was thinking
true....we did a lil trick, we didnt finish the surround for the enclosure so when you open 1 door and close the other and open the trunk(which wasn't sealed off) the pressure jumped quite a bit, the door that was closed sounded and looked like it was gonna fall off the car, it really impressed poeple, i thought it was funny
