I think i messed up my amp

Well this just sucks! My friend put a metal rod in my trunk and the rod hit the terminals on my sub box and blew the fuses on the amp. I replaced the fuses and tested the sub out and it sounded good so i thought it was fixed. The next day when i went to work i turned up the music and my sub shut out. I checked the amp and it went into protect. I thought it was the ground but i regrounded the amp and still the amp goes into protect mode when i turn the music up. I have a 4 ohm sub wired to the 2 channel amp that is bridged and 4ohm stable. I did notice that if i hook up the sub to one channel that is 2 ohm stable it works fine. Do i need a new amp or is there something else i could check? please help.

By the way thanks LASH for the box design i think ill work on the box this weekend if i could get my amp to work.

try disconnecting the power from the amp.
Disconnect the sub from the amp.
Reconnect the power

If it still goes into protection, then it's not your sub.

If you cant' get it out of protection, try unhooking it completely, and take a jumper (small piece of wire) and connect the power and ground terminals. This will discharge the capacitors inside and may also reset the protection circuit.

If it still doesn't work after you hook it back up, you probably toasted a few fet's. take it to a shop or buy a new one

if i turn off my radio and then turn it on then it will work if the volume is down it could go all day like that . it is when i turn the volume up that it goes into protect. Also if i hook it up to one channel instead of bridging it then i could turn it up. It seems as if the sub is operating at 2 ohms or something because it works on one channel that is 2 ohm stable but not bridged that is 4 ohm stable.

Did you know he put the metal rod in your trunk??? I he put it in there and you didn't know it, I'd make him pay for it!

hmm... hit the terminals on the sub box? didnt touch anything else did it? if it only touched the sub, maybe its halfway blown. I've had this happen to me a few times, I've blown up a few subs and they still insisted on working (like a little 3.5" sub I had for a computer, ran 400 watts through it and it STILL worked at low volumes, higher volumes it would just cut out)

If you have another speaker or sub lying around, test it with that. If you can crank it up high without it cutting out, it's probably the sub. If it still has the same problem its probably the amp. Either way, you're probably gonna have to get something fixed, or buy a new one.

DOnt think it was using all 400w at low volume

Hey guys thanks for the input. I tried another sub and it did the same thing so i thought it was the amp. But I also put the sub on another amp and that car did the same thing. So i just went out and bought two of these:

The subs are say they are 800rms a peice althought i doubt it. and they are dual vioce coil. got them for $35 a peice.

and one of these

says it is 1920watts max bridged and 440 watt rms per channel at 2 ohms. not bad for $150

sorry if there was a misunderstanding, I meant I blew it up with 400 watts (actually 380w RMS) and it still worked at low volumes. it was a tiny 3.5" 10 watt floor sub. quite amusing actually, it was even smoking up the room XD

2200, glad you found the problem... or at least an alternative. looks like maybe the amp took out the subs or vise versa (my amp took out my subs... best damn subs I've ever had and paid $214CAD for too! >.<
