help with ohms

its a lil off topice but...
im building some speakers using 2 4 ohm 6x9's and a 4 ohm tweeter. ive been calculating to get then to 8 ohms but need some help. so far the best ive done is connect a 6x9 and tweeter in parallel and thoes two in series to the last 6x9.

is it possible to use resistors or anythin to bring them to 8 ohms.

ohms in series are additive. R1+R2=Rtotal. by putting to 4 ohm components in parallel, you're getting 2 ohms. 1/R1 + 1/R2 = 1/Rtotal. your last setup should be giving you approximately 6 ohms. you could hook a 2 ohm resistor in series, but it would have to be a massive resistor to handle the power.

here's a 2 ohm, 50 watt resistor:

you have to be careful mounting something like this, because it's going to dissipate that power as heat. and these things get really hot.

Impedance while in ohms, is not resistance. It's kinda complicated.

correct, but the formulas still hold true, and it's still a load felt by the amp.

thanx,
so what kinds of problems will i face if i run them a 6 ohms on an 8 ohm, im pretty sure the back of the reciver says it can handel 4 to 8 tho.

It you set the reciver for a 4ohm load and the speakers are a 6 ohm you could possibly damage the radio. Set it for a 8 ohm load it they will be under power'ed again could cause damage.

My question is my are you connecting a tweeter and 6x9's, I would have got a 2 or 3 way 6x9 and it would have had a tweeter in it.

im using 2, 4-way 6x9 on each with a tweeter, i like my sound bright and wide, will the different settings effect the sound at all

If your receiver is set for 4 ohms and you connect a 6 ohm load your receiver won't put out as much power since it's driving into a higher resistance, but you won't damage the stereo.

If you set it for 8 ohms and connect a 6 ohm load then the receiver will put out more current than it would if it were hooked to an 8 ohm load. You'll get more power out this way but it may damage your stereo by drawing high currents.

why dont you just connect them in series instead of in parrallel and set the amp for 8 ohms.

why amplifiers, matching the load gets the most use out of the power it is producing.
