stock replacements

hi everyone--im pretty new to the audio stuff, so i've been reading up alot lately, searching alot, and there is definately a great amount of information to be found

that being said, i am thinking about changing out my stock speakers in my 04 cavalier. it is the top of the line radio(for oem), and it sounds pretty good, but i want it to be a little better.

im not crazy about doing the whole "getting a system" idea(id like to keap the stock head unit and no subs) but something a little better than stock would be great.

my question is: is it worth it to simply replace the front and rear speakers with something better? will i be able to hear a difference? what should i look for--brands? specs? prices?

like i said, i've been reading alot, and i'm pretty new to all this stuff, so any help you guys can give me is greatly appreciated. thanks again to everyone who can help me out.

There's a billion brands, and everyone will have a different opinion. Stop by your local audio shop and hear some of the speakers. For the rears, 6x9's, and for the front, make or buy an adapter and get the ever popular 6 1/2's up front.

well, you will notice a difference, but i dont think it would be as big as you think.

the stock speakers on these cars is a paper cone, at least mine were. you may and probably will get a better quality sound by putting in an aftermarket speaker.

i probably wouldnt go with the 6.5" speakers in the front. just get something decent quality with a cone better than paper, which is pretty much anything.

i would probably go with just anything in the back, and if your car is one of the ones that didnt come with a seperate tweeter, i would get a 4x6 2 way coaxil for the front, which has both the speaker and the tweeter combined in the same unit. that will give you better sound.

the 6.5" speakers are a good idea, but the adapters can be a bastard to make yourself. if you do want to go with something bigger than normal sized speaker for the front, than i would probably just by the adapter baffles from a local audio shop.

like i said, i would just get 2 4x6" coaxil's for the front, and just some run of the mill 6x9's for the back. you should notice the difference just from getting rid of the paper cone.

have fun.

Injection is nice but id rather be BLOWN!

ok, so what you're saying is just do the factory size 4x6" coaxils for the front, which should sound better, even though they are the stock size, and then just an upgrade to the 6x9's in the back. basically there is really no reason to go larger than stock on the fronts?

if anyone has any other advice/opinions they would as always be greatly appreciated. thanks guys, you've been very helpful so far.

i heard oval speakers get crappy mid bass, so that coul be a reason to go with 6.5's up front, also a bigger cone would mean more air displacement and therfore louder...and its not hard to make adaptors...just cut some rings out of some mdf board or something and check for clearance...you might not notice a huge difference if ur running off the factory deck mainly because ur not gettin more power to the speakers, but it should be at least a little better...as for brands, since you dont seem like u wanna spend a lot of money, maybe something along the lines of pioneer or sony would work for you.

you want to bump, then they will bump and hit real hard and a lot good.

the best thing i ever did was upgrade my pioneer 4x6's to 6 1/2 components. made a world of difference. the components are definately worth it.

on a side note...i had my upgraded speakers in about a month before my aftermarket head unit. i could tell a difference with the upgrade on the stock deck...but not a large one. i didn't notice a real big difference until i put in my aftermarket HU.

GO PATS!!!

These are a great choice for value/ quality..........they sound good, are only 150.......most speakers will be twice that..............and are the speakers which are going into my car.

i liked that product, seemed like very high quality. but my question is, to install that, won't i have to cut my door panels up? i'm obviously no expert, but what kind of process would installing those be? just curious, as i am not sure exactly how far into audio i want to get.

thanks again for everyone's patience, and the great advice so far. i appreciate it, and keep any ideas/answers coming.

One thing to consider, since you dont want crazy subs, if your looking for a little more bass would be the bazooka tubes. Even the 6" tubes provide plenty of crisp bass. I know because my buddy has one and he got his for around $300 CDN. Get some decent speakers, a deck, a bazooka tube, a 2 or 4 channel amp for the speakers and you will have a quality system that sounds good for a reasonable price.

this is the sub my buddy has clicky

You should be able to get a decent system for around $600 if you watch for local sales and such.

Only other words of advice would be to not go cheap and sacrifice quality

Whats up people?

Dan, those Polk speakers that Narco showed you only went down to 53hz. A good set of 4x6 in the front from Pioneer will go down to 45hz. You can get a good Pioneer setup with good frequency response for around $160 for all four speakers. I am running 6x9 Pioneer quads and 4x6 Pioneer duals. The sound is great.

listen to some coax speakers that go to 45 and a set of polk comps that go to 53 and I am sure you will choose the comps..................

Narco, these are the 4x6 Pioneers I am talking about.
Pioneer 4x6 Speakers
Since the 4x6 that came stock in my car were coaxial and paper cone, I dumped them ASAP when I bought the car in 98. I loved how GM thought those were upgraded speakers.
The 6x9's I have are similar to these Pioneers.

When you go into Pep Boys the next time go look at the speakers in the red and yellow packages that say factory replacement. See the factthat they are paper and cost all of
like $6.00 each for a 6 x 9. That is what your car has in it from GM. Now go to Best Buy
or your favorite store that carries higher end equipement and compair what you see there to that of the Pep Boys factory replacement stuff and you will see why you are paying more at Best Buy. The quality is so far superior its like compareing a model T
Ford to a new Ford GT. There is just no comparison. Both will get you from A to B but which would you rather have?

Semper Fi SAINT. May you rest in peace.

Z wouldn't those 4x6 plate components take around 15-25w rms to sound good? Does the stock deck even have 5w rms? I personally hate 4x6 coaxials and Pioneer but, to each his own...But I think you have a very good idea in going with the plate separates. I am running ALPINE 6 1/2s in the front with ALPINE deck MA Audio 502 amp an MA Audio D6 dvc 12" and Jensen (soon to be ALPINE 6 1/2 components (from storage) or ALPINE 6x9s I think the best bang for the buck would be to go to Wal-mart for the Sony Xplod (or Pioneer) cd player 4x6s and 6x9s. He could also pick up one of those powered subs that mount in the spare tire well for a little bass. BUT FOR GOD'S SAKE USE A METRA 99-3301 INSTALL KIT AND A WIRING HARNESS WIRED VIA STICKY!

I'm with stupid!>>>>>>Of coarse, sometimes I feel like turining those arrows the other way and saying I'm stupid!
