You could always make the big box, and if you don't like it, fill it with some 2x4's to bring the box size down.
i am planning a fiberglass enclosure

You can still use 2x4's inside of fiberglass.
ya but i dont want to add anymore weight than i have to

Youre talkinf about 5 lbs. added at most. If youre that concerned about weight....you shouldn't be putting two 12" subs in your car.

i think the tuning should be around 30-35 htz, most people say thats the best for normal everyday driving... since thats wat the post is about... if you're new to subs and tuning the boxes and whatever, don't be 100% set on gettin it totally right the 1st time...i know i messed up a box or two, and my current one isnt exactly perfect...i found out a neat tool at www.accelerator-pedal.com/l-ported-box.htm it lets you simply put in ur desired box size and tuning freq as well as the width and height...it has worked pretty good for me, but if the tuning doesnt work right (i.e. the port tries to be too long) then there should be a link to a slotted port box which you may find useful, hope i helped

please... nobody put 2X4s in your box... its so ghetto... if you need to make a smaller box, put the effort into popping it on the table saw and take out a section, screw it back together and seal it up nice. hack jobs are so eighties. if you want your box to hit harder, I'd tune it a bit higher because most songs produced nowadays don't put too much effort into that much low frequency information. 45Hz would be a good range to peak your box at. if you have a good constant rolloff rate, it should still get some good low bass for those synthesized 36Hz notes. try making the box a little big to start, and test out how you like it. you can always make it smaller, not always bigger. good luck.
