Where do you get your power supply for your amp? - Audio & Electronics Forum

I have my amp and subs now installed in the trunk of my 04 sunfire. The only thing left to do is wire up the amp to a power supply. I have 2 wires coming out of the amp. One is for a constant 12 volts and the other says remote. I take it the remote is hooked up to a source that turns on and off with the ignition switch. I can hook the constant 12 volts straight to the battery, but where can I hook in to get juice when the key is turned on? I looked in the fuse panel under the hood and it seems there is nothing to hook to there. I've wired up amps in older cars and it was pretty simple. This is a little trickier, plus I don't want to fry anything. Any help would be appreciated.
thanks

there is a battery side terminal kit that you should use for hooking up your 12V to your amp with. thats the best way to do it, but you can also just add it to the current positve wire for the entire car by making themboth fit in or behind the rubber suround boot on the positive terminal.
as for your 12V remote, that is a switched 12V. basically, you nee a switched 12V so your amp doesnt run all the time, killing your car while it just sits there. most decks have a "riger" wire with them. im not 100% sure how you would wire it up if it is a factory cd, but i know it is possible.
you can also take your 12V switched off of the battery positive terminal aswell, but install a toggle or rocker switch in the car near your deck, or atleast between the battery and the amplifier. this is a hack way to do it, but will work in a pinch. turn switch on to run amp, turn off when you dont. just remember to turn the switch off before you exit the car, or you will drain your battery.
Injection is nice but id rather be BLOWN!
Thanks for the reply whitegoose. If i can't find a remote source I can do what you said and hook up a toggle switch and turn it on and off.

are you hookin it up to the stock head unit or after market one? if its a after market unit then there is a blue wire on the back that is the romote or acc. some radios have 2 one is your remote and one is for a power ant. if you hook it up to the one for the power ant. then your amp will olny come on with the radio.
if its the stock deck the best way is to do what is said above and hook up a switch
You can also just use a fuse tap and tap into say....... the fuse for the windshield wipers(switched) located on the drivers side of the dash.
or you could hook it up to the wiper motor directly so you only get bass when you wash your windows

I forgot to mention I am using the stock cd player. That does make it a little more tricky. Most aftermarket cd players have that wire for the amp. Would it affect anything if I tapped into the wire that runs to the windshield wiper switch? I did go ahead and buy a toggle switch so I can turn go that route if I need to. That does have its good points, being able to turn your amp and subs on and off. I sometimes listen to fox sports report. I don't need any bass for that.
Thats for all your help and ideas.

It won't hurt anything to tap into your winshield wiper fuse, or your radio fuse for that matter.

If you tap into the wire and not directly into the fuse, you may want to include an in-line fuse before you run the wire to the amp. But you'll be fine doing it.
I bought a couple of inline fuses from Autozone a couple of days ago. Definetly don't want to fry anything!

make sure that if you are running it from your fuse pannel like the other guys said to do, that you run it from the right side of the fuse.
the fuse will be inline between 2 wires, one wire from the battery, and one wire to the radio for example.
i know it seems like a really simple thing, but everyone has brain farts and forgets about stupid things sometimes.
if you arent sure which is the wire FROM the battery or TO the unit, take a multimeter or volt meter and measure the voltage. stick the lead on one of the wires either side of the fuse and the common on ground or negative. pull the fuse out with those leads still attached. if 12V is still showing, then you have the lead attached to the wire from the battery, if 0V shown, then you have the lead after the fuse and not directly to the battery.
if you attach your trigger or switched 12V's to the wire from the battery, your amp will always be on.
have fun!

I got the amp hooked up and everything works great. I found on the inside of my car the fuse panel. My car doesn't have many options and there was a spot for a fuse that said cruise. My car doesn't have cruise so I hooked into that spot and ran it to the remote hookup. I ran the other wire straight to the battery. It now works with the ighition switch.
Thanks everyone for all your help and advise.
