Help-install on Viper 160XV?
Friday, December 09, 2005 6:26 AM
just gotten the kit, now im choosing between having it being installed professioanlly or have a friend of mine who did a remote starter on his car help me install it. im gonna assume that i'll need to purchase the bypass module to get pass the passlock 2(if i bring the kit to having it installed professionally, do i still need to purchase the module and bring it along)? also besides the kit, do i need to buy additional gauge wires for splicing them in between the viper kit and the car's harness'? if anyone had done this install in the past please fill me in, otherwise what places allows me to bring in the kit for them to install professionally? Cicuit City, Best Buy, or anmy local mom/pop shop? thanks in advance.

Pretty much anywhere will install it even if you didn't buy it from them. Yes you will need the bypass module, but if you get it installed somewhere they should stock it. A remote start isn't very dificult so if you have a friend that will help you I'd say give it a shot. To get it installed by someone else you're probly lookin at around $100

Where do you guys keep getting these Viper products? DEI is supper pissy about selling them outright to customers, in fact the guy selling these can lose their dealer account.

I install this unit daily. If you take it to a shop they are going to WAY overcharge you for labor since you didn't buy it there. The only thing you need is what is in the box, plus the 555 L module to bypass the passlock 2 security. (If you have power locks in your car, you will need a 455 M relay pack to make wiring simpler.) But thats it. I would recommend someone install this with experience locating and identifying wires. It is easy for someone to fry something if they have not done it before.

Mennitti thanks for the notice. i do have power locks, the 455 m relay could be picked up at places such as radio shack or autozone correct? i'll search ebay to find the passlock 2(its 2 not 2 right?) for a new 555L module. i do have both chilton and haynes manual which covers the color wires. hopefully my friend and i can put this together, wish us luck. also any advise and warnings b4 i go into installing it this weekend(hopefully)?

In the main white plug for the brain; you only need Red (12 volts), Black (ground), White (parking lights). Optional is the thick Brown for horn honk, the Red/White is for negative power trunk if you have it.

The second plug; Black/White is the ground you hook your switch up to. The grey is hood pin which is not necessary. The Blue/Black is for an extra remote turn on lead to work your 555 L module (there is also a blue lead on top of the relay satellite pack, use which ever one you want).

DEI reccomends grounding your leads in the kick pannel/floor board. Scrape your paint and use a seperate screw, not a bolt already in the car.

For the main 12 volt power; use one Red from the satellite pack and the Red lead from the Brain on a 12 volt ignition wire in your steering column, use the second Red lead from the satellite pack on the other 12 volt ignition lead in the column so you are splitting up the load.

The 555 L make sure you are hooking up for Passlock 2 in the manual. Find the skinny passlock wires in your column. Should be a Black, Yellow, and White (don't use) running together inside of tape. Cut the Yellow in the car. The 555 L Yellow attaches to the key side of the cut wire, the Black/Yellow attaches to the car side of the cut wire. The Black wire in the car needs bared, attach the 555 L Black wire to the cars Black.

Make sure to solder EVERYTHING, or your weiner will fall off!!!!!! Don't use t-taps or solderless connectors. Good luck.

This may help for wiring and for pictures of wire locations.

Also, the 455 M door lock relay pack has to be purchased from DEI, wherever you bought your starter from.

Mennitti, on the bulldog site, it lists a different module bypass for the 99 cav, "GM's PASSLOCK 1 ANTI-THEFT System, Requires 791 Bypass Module". i thought it was the 555L module?

DEI's part number is 555L, its not an industry model number.

We use the DIR451M at our store, and the DIR555L

With Viper why not have it professionally installed? We offer a FULL LIFETIME parts/Labor Warrenty on all VIPER at our store.

1 year replacement of the remotes if they are broke.

And we allow the customer to come back, have the entire system removed by one of our guys, then reinstalled on a new car and only pay labor. And the best part is they get to keep the LIFETIME warrenty. As long as our installers are the ones who remove and reinstall.

If you mess around with your car, and you touch the wrong wire you could possibly burn up your BCM. Be careful.

I'll install it for $100 if you want to drive up to Mass. I have done so many in cavaliers, I could do them in my sleep.

At Circuit city we charge the same price for installation if you buy it from us or not, and they still get the lifetime warrenty, that should apply no matter where it gets installed as long as it's professionally installed.

"Professionally installed........." The work I have seen from Circuit City has been done using t-taps and scotch-locks, I hope your store doesn't use this practice. If they do, check out the Car Sound & Performance Forums sometime, see what real professionals think of soldering vs t-taps.
Pro shops using scotchlocks

yea, 451m door lock relay, otherwise you can use any relay, and you do have passlock 1 on your car. you need to use majority of the wires coming out of the 555L, even bulb check, and possibly (-) starter input, i do not think you need the ignition input, i dont recall when i did mine. good luck

will i just installed the security aspect of the car-blinkers, un/lock on the doors, panic, and in process the trunk release which i need a relay for it. im waiting on the bypss module so i can finish up on the ignition part of it then set up the keyless with the controller to start the car up and other add-ons. for relays i've been using the SPST 12v types u get from radio shack. i do have a few questions though. some of the wires like the dome light im not gonna connect to but other colors of the wires say to use a negative wire, not ground to make other channels open. those who have installed the viper 160xv might know what im talking about, otherwise i'll type out exactly what the instructions on the particular wire is saying.
