I recently bought a Jensen CD4720 for my 89 Camaro RS but decided to put it in my cavalier since it lights up blue and my cavy is blue but the problem is I've been told that all the safety features and the door chime are wire through the factory radio so if i were to install this radio i would need some sort of adapter wiring harness and supposedly mount my factory P.O.S. in like the trunk or somethingi was just wondering if anyone has a better solution to this problem then keeping the factory radio hooked up because I have been told by a few places that that is pretty much what they do.........
you could just do without the door chimes and toss the old one
i changed my radio to an after market one i still got my chimes

Yes you will loose your chime unless you use a really long T-harness that lets you relocate the factory radio to the trunk or under a seat. The reason for this is because the factory chime module is built into the factory radio. I know they are starting to come out with a simple harnes that you plug into the factory location and it has a built in chime module in it and you would not need to have the factory radio for the chime.
As far as Saftey Systems, go to everyone of the people that told you it'll be messed up to go play with them selves. That's about all they are good for. No, an after market radio, with or without the harnesses mentioned above, will not lose any of the saftey systems. That is something they use to get people you want to buy the aftermarket radio to spend an additional $50 or however much it is. Total

.
If you really want the aftermarket radio, go for it. You will train your self to remember to turn off your headlights. And don't forget the jumper cables. I needed them a few times will in my training process.
Good luck.
Go with the Metra adaptor. It has a little box for the chimes built in and allows you to completely toss the factory radio.

You're a pre 2000. After that the chime was built into the radio.
If you want to keep the door chimes, you will either need to relocate the stock deck, I believe the harness is around $30, or use the chime module, which will run you closer to $90.

You're right, it has no effect on the SRS, but don't assume everyone reccomending the module is ignorant. All the guys in the shop I work in know that removing the radio does nothing to the air bags, but we are told to sell the customer the module.
If you decide not to use the T harness or the chime module, you will need to run an ignition wire to either the fuse box or the ignition harness so that you're deck will turn on. Read the sticky as well, there's lots of info in it.

The adaptor is the Metra GMRC-01 adaptor. I used the adaptor so I didn't have to deal with running a 17' cable and mountng the factory radio in the trunk. Mine has been in for a year with no problems.
