Need a car alarm..suggestions please
Wednesday, October 26, 2005 6:40 PM
Well, if you remember, I was robbed at the bash. Since then, my car has been messed with 3 seperate times. Granted, it hasn't been anything major......first time they broke off one of my wiper arms, second time it was egged, and third time those pathetic @!#$ stole my valve caps.
Bottom line is, I'm tired of people @!#$ with my car.

So I want to get an alarm, and here is what I'd like....
I want it to be pretty sensitive, so that if someone touches it, it'll go off, but not so sensitive that someone walking by it sets it off.
I would like to have microwave inside, so I can leave my windows down at Wal*Mart and not worry about it.
I'd like a pager with it.
Doesn't have to have remote unlock or remote windows down, cuz I have manual locks and windows.....just remote arm/disarm.
I want something that will last, not some cheapo junk that'll quit working after a week.

That's about it that I can think of.

Now since I know nothing about alarms, can any of you help me????

VIPER

I've got the 791xv. Works great. I've also got the prox sensor. I find the prox sensor is a little bit too sensitive. I have found that turning the impact sensor all the way up and and disabling the prox sensor when i'm in a parking lot or something like that works best. It would go off constantly as people would be walking around it. And who's really gonna mess with your car in a crowded lot. When I park it where there aren't alot of people around or at my house, I leave it enabled.

Now you can adjust the sensors, if you can find where they installed them. Nothing more than turning a "screw" and testing it out. My prox sensor is set to instant alarm just inside the car and the warn away is about two feet out. Like I said the impact is turned all the way up. You can also get glass breaks sensors, crazy silly loud inside sirens all kinds of stuff. I got mine installed at tweeter.

Check out AutoAlarmPro.com I just ordered a Code Alarm CA630. You have to install it yourself. Which is something I wanted to do. If you search around the site they do have other systems, accessories, etc, etc. No DEI products though

Just a suggestion, Hope this helps!
Peace Out!

Code Alarm = Audiovox. It's ok stuff, but I like DEI better. We sell the Python line at Circuit City, same as Viper. Both have lifetime warrenties. Whatever alarm you buy, you'll most likely need to add the prox sensor, I haven't seen one yet that comes with one, but they aren't too bad.

I paid a little over 200 bucks for my viper 791-- I installed it myself however.

If you set your shock sensor really sensitive- trucks driving by and mild cars will set it off... Gets kinda annoying..

I have a proximity sensor for my car- but I still wouldn't leave the windows down just because I have it... It only take a second or 2 to reach into the window and steal @!#$...By the time your alarm/pager starts going off- Im already running away with your @!#$.

The prox. sensors are totally adjustable-- Mine is set not to chirp when your close to the car- but as soon as you put your hand about 3-4" into the window, it warns you.

I would probably go with a viper if I were you- DEI products are really good.

Mine was $800 or so installed at the local tweeter. I haven't had any problems with false triggers on my impact yet. At home I park off a back ally so there isn't much traffic.

The viper 791XV is definately the alarm I would go with. However your probably not going to know if someone just touches your car or takes off your valve caps. The only way possible is to have the microwave (508d) exterior zone turned up. However, you will get tired of that real quick. If you have peizo sirens or tinted windows, a glass break sensor might not always function properly.

My alarm system: Viper 791XV with battery backup, shock sensor, 2 internal piezo sirens, 2 external revenger sirens, Directed 508D (microwave with exterior zone turned down but interior zone up so that as soon a someone reaches in the alarm goes), of course the passlock 2 for remote start, disabled trunk pop from inside the car, and to top it off a headlight strobe kit for front two headlights & revearse lights in the rear ( Wired into the alarm so that when alarm is set off all strobes flash in which ever sequence is set.

The most important think is install. But the brain on top of the dash instead of under by the drivers side. Everone knows it is a lot harder to take the dash apart vs. just reaching under the dash. Make all wiring look as factory as possible. Well hidden sirens, hood pin comes with it, and a battery backup is a must.

Draw as much attention to your car when your alarm goes off.

I'd stay away from anything that's not DEI or Compustar. I have both and they work really well....but I lean more towards Compustar as it's been with me for the last 3 years on 3 different cars and is still going strong. Plus, Compustar is # 1 when comes to reception...they use wide spectrum and fm technology. And oh by the way, I have an extra Viper system lying around without the proximity sensor....let me know if you want it.

Viper (or anything DEI) or Compustar - I've had both and have never had a problem. I too lean toward Compustar because of the rediculous range, but you'd be served very well by either brand.
