aftermarket cruise control, who has it and...
Wednesday, October 26, 2005 7:45 PM
i want to do it, but am not sure of the kits.
i dont really want to go with digging in a junkyard and clipping wires here and there and soforth.

i would like a relatively simply(i know it wont be too easy) install for a decent price.

what ones have any of you dealt with and how did it work for you.

Maybe contact http://www.speedometershop.com/ . I got a kit from them for my non-j-body in the past for around $150. The stalk and main unit were more of a universal type, but all the wiring and brackets were car specific. Many Toyota techs have asked who installed the kit, and where I got it. It is that clean of an install.

The hardest part of the install was taking apart the steering column to mount the control stalk.

i was thinking of maybe just having something mounted to my dash so i dont have to mess with the steering column, i hate messing witht eh steering column.

like i have noted before it seems like you always have extra parts to sell on ebay when your done.

I had a friend with a <1993 Chevy S-10. I think it was something like this Audiovox unit. I dunno how hard it was to install. Nothing special, but I do know it worked fine.

This pic is the $89.95 Audiovox AVX-CCS-100 on SummitRacing.

The stock cruise control isn't that hard to add. $100 got me all the parts from a wrecking yard... and it was a clean install. Best part is, you know it's going to work right....

Most everything, save the engine, transmission, etc, are the same in 95-00 Cavaliers. I see no reason for it not to work as long as you stayed in those years.

I'll have to check when I get home... but I think most of the cruise control stuff remained unchanged along the years..

I know they "updated" the stuff inside the control box at some point... but either one would work with the other (backwards compatible). The switch is DEFINITELY the same for all years. Meaning a 95 switch will work in a 2005, or vice-versa.

I'm at work right now. I'll comment more later (if I remember)

What parts are needed to be able to add factory cruise to a cav?

I know I need a new column switch, but I don't know what else I need to get.

Also , does anyone have any idea how to add this? I'm pretty mechanical, just never messed with a cruise control install before.

Thanks

Ok, control unit changed in 99. 95-98 are the same, so are 99-05. The cable is different, based on the engine. The switch is the same. The release switch (on clutch and brake on manuals, only on brake on autos) is different but only between manual/auto. 95-05 are the same. The mounting bracket obviously is different depending on engine.

So.. swap away.

Thanks Lenko, that definately cleared up a few things.

Can you tell me what specific parts I need to complete this on a 2000 2.2 ?

I need a new switch, but what else, specifically?

thanks

also, some ebay auctions list the servo, etc as being from an aurora, lesabre, cavalier, etc. As in, they are compatible with all of those vehicles. any idea if this is true?

yeah what alls needed from the junkyard. im guessing it can be any year correct?

Read KwkRide's page. I grabbed the stuff from a wrecking yard for him, and he did the install. All the info you need is in there.

Basically, keep the parts close to your year. The wiring is pretty much universal, so any year should do. The switch arm is the same for all years. The control box, get one with the cable you need for your throttle body... so if you have a 2200, get one from a 2200. Not rocket science here guys
