I have 3 mtx 8000's and a modded mtx 1501D amp. The amp is 1800 watts RMS and the subs are 400 RMS each. Do I need to upgrade the batttery and alternator?
Wouldn't hurt to do the Big 3 and a yellowtop battery. Try that first.

The only difference really between Optima batteries and other batteries is the fact that optima uses a "gel" instead of the regular liquid acid. The reasoning behind this is so that you dont have the liquid slowly seeping through your terminals, which creates corrosion. This is supposed to mean longer battery life. If you have a system, its gonna drain your battery faster then you can corode the thing anyway so expensive optima batteries arent really necessary. They do have a higher cold cranking amps, but instead I suggest going to a local mechanic and plan on upgrading your battery size, which may require relocating it. The best brand of batteries are Insterstate brand. They are the only company to used non recycled lead, which is much cleaner. As for alternator, you can always upgrade that. Stinger makes great alternators for systems, or you could get one from a GM truck or old chyrsler, they made some big ones. You can also have certain shops tune your alternator to crank out more amps. Of course there is a drawback. These aftermarket or bigger alternators drain your horsepower bad. So its up to you, more show and less go?
