is it possible to replace the head unit on a 2003 cavy without buying this adapter?
Yeah, if you read the sticky, you would see that you can get the harness from a 2000 tracker and it'll work. All you have to do is use an add-a-fuse, plug it into your whipers, and run your red wire to it.

its not just the tracker harness,its a harness for a venture,impala and acouple others its a 99-2003 harness, it will work that way but your door chime wont work which isnt a big deal,ive seen in some cars to that your cigarette lighter and dome light wont work either w/ out the gmrc-01,dont know bout cav's and fires but you can always re-wire a dome light if it did do that.Its alot better than paying $90 for the harness
You're not going to lose your dome lights or your lighter or anything but your chimes. I know it isn't a tracker harness, but if he tells them he has a 2000 geo tracker he won't get the run-around from wherever he picks it up from.

actually, i did lose my dome light in my fire, but i just wired the orange wire to the memory wire on the head unit and it worked fine.
Dome light isn't even part of the radio!!!!!!!

Yeah and so is the ejector seat feature too :~ Seriously, I've done tons of installs on 2000+ cavaliers and not one have I had the dome light not work after an aftermarket deck was installed.

the door chime isnt a part of the radio either but if u dont get a gmrc-01 the door chime wont work,and it doesnt matter that the dome light isnt a part of the radio in newer gm cars everything is ran threw one harness as apposed to individual harness running off seperate fused system,so obviosuly if u dont get the proper harness which properly connects everything it wont work,and thats why they can sell it for $90
And that's why I've used a 15 dollar harness and the ONLY thing you lose is the chimes. And obviously it's a waste of 90 dollars if you don't care about chimes.
