I just went to circuit city to purchase a new cd player for my 04 cavalier, he tried to tell me i needed a special adapter for the car so my check engine light wouldn't come on. He told me the adapter was so the dealerships could run diagnostics on the car, was he right or was he feeding me a line of crap. The adapter was an extra $90.00

Your head unit has not a damned thing to do with the check engine light
You dont need any 90 dollar part just 10 bucks in wire and electrical tape
What is the number to the store I want to call up and speak to the head installer, I dont give a @!#$ if its long distance post the number

i understand everything about being able to use an aftermarket player, i've installed a few myself, but is that thing about the diagnostics true, that they need the factory radio in to read something? or do they just use their diagnostic scanner things and that's it?
your head unit has nothing to do with obd2........NOTHING

like said above all you will lose is your chimes. Just so you guys know coming from a Circuit City installer, that some installers tell the customer that so that they don't have to sell the 17 dollar harness and run a wire from the ignition for switch power for the radio. It might be because they are lazy or like at my store they don't ever have the cheaper harness in stock and want to get your car done today.

holy crap, i wish i knew that... my ccity guys must be an idiot!! (i work at ccity, just not in the roadshop)
they told me specifically that it was _REQUIRED_ for an aftermarket radio, and had to do with the theft deterent devices in the car... and the check engine light would come on if you were to turn the ignition on without this "adapter/chime box"....
still, it was half price at employee cost ... but damn... I would never have gotten it if i didn't need it. it's obnoxiously loud too. there's a trace on the circuit board you can cut to lower the volume, but it was still too loud for me. so I put electric tape over the speaker hole, and now it sounds good... i'm gonna yell at those guys next time i go to work ...
