Amp cutting out, any ideas?
Friday, August 26, 2005 6:56 PM
Hey guys, my amp has been cuitting out lately, its an old jensen 500 watt am, ive had it for about 4 years now, but it has never given me any problems until now. Every once in a while it will not turn on. The logo will light up, but the amp itself will not turn on. Everything is still connected as it should be, and i really cant figure out what could be causing it, is my amp taking a dump??

might be a protection circuit kicking in. Is there a protection light?

Its probably taking a dump, but make sure to check all the connections from front to back. Make sure there isn't any corrosion on the ground and positive terminals. Check rcas to make sure they are not pinched or abraided on anything. Check all the common sense stuff. When you're satisfied that it is the amp, remove its back panel, hook it up backwards and watch the sparks fly!

Yeah there is a protection light, dunno why itd be kicking in tho. Everything is connected properly, and there is no corrosion as all terminals are gold. If i jump a 12v power source over into the remote terminal then it kicks on so what does that mean....

it means your remote wire is not giving it enough power..... try taking the "remote" wire from your radio and use it to turn on a relay to provide a nice normal voltage 12V source to your amps etc.

you could tap the remote turn on wire into the wiper fuse too.

Peace Out!!!

Check to make sure the remote wire is not pinched, and shorting out.

Alright thanks guys, would tapping it into the wiper fuse do the same thing, which fuse box is the fuse in, the one underhood, or in car?? I figured it was just that it isnt getting enough power to turn on, is it possible that the 12v power wire isnt supplying enough power?? I have a breaker on my 12v wire, its 4 guage and my battery is in the trunk so there isnt much resistance on the 12v line, but the breaker may be taking a dump, could that be the case or is this defenitely related to the remote?

O forgot to mention that my crossover is also hooked to the remote(duh) and that never does this, but it is also mounted in the glove box close to the deck whereas the amp is in the trunk, dunno if that is significant or not, just trying to get all the info out there that i can so i can get this fixed.

Check your ground. If it doesnt have a good connection to the car, you will still get power on the amp, but not enough to make it run. I had that problem last night. rattled the bolt loose on my ground to the car. If you have a multimeter check the voltage of the +/- if its anything below 9v but your battery says 12v. chances are its your ground.

my battery is in the trunk so the amp is connected directly to the battery, no chance of a bad ground.
