8" sub in ported box??
Thursday, August 11, 2005 10:34 AM
I will be building a new box for my Cerwin-Vega HED-802 8" sub, and I still can,t decide wether to build a ported or a sealed one. Again, I'm shooting for SQ only. My two goals are amazing transient response and a flat response curve. What would be best, keeping in mind that I am feeding it with 150W RMS, which is what it is rated to.

Cheers,

G

Any size recommendations, Wisywig? With www.carstereo.com sub box calculator, a box with a QTC of 0.8 would be 1.5ft3. Will I loose a lot in '"punch" and transient response by building a bigger box?

They recommend 0.50ft3, but the Q-logic box it is in is 0.6cu. ft and doesn't give a good transient response.

Alright, I just built the 0.35cu ft box they recommended when filled with polyfill. I still haven't tried it yet as the polyurethane sealant needs to dry and the terminal cups isn't installed on yet.

It weighs like twice as much as the Q-Logic box, even though it is half the size, so I guess it should be way better. It still seems infinitely small, but, anyways.... Can't wait to see how it sounds. Cerwin Vega shows a graph in the manual for the Qtc response of the enclosure, and it seems extremely linear, being -30db @ 10HZ all the way to 0db @ 60hz, without any peaks.

I'll post the results tonight, when I'll have it work.

those Q-Logic boxes, and any other prefab box for that matter, are usually made out of some cheap ply wood, so if you used 3/4 inch MDF like you should have then your box should weigh a lot more than the prefab. And it will definately sound better not being in some flimsy box, cant wait to here results

Hi all,

Alright, I finished building the 0.35ft^3( geez it's small!) sealed box, and I can only say that it is exactly what I wanted from a sub. The SQ really is impressive, no more "lag" in the sound, transient response is excellent, and plays low enough for me, surprisingly - I would've expected a box that small to be rather limited on the low end! Because of my amp I can only wire it in 8ohm though, so with only 100wRMS going at it, it does lack a bit of juice for the big bass tunes. I'll just slap an infinity mono amp on the sub and my current amp ( Lightning Audio Bolt B2.150.2 2chan. ) on my components that are supposed to be here this week, JL VR600-CS ( not the newer gen CSi, but I don,t think there's any diff. in sound right? Got an amazing deal on them so I couldn't pass it up ).

For now, the sub doesn't blend very well with the rest of the system, as the Pioneers aren't that good at playing midbass. I really hope the JL will be better.

Sndsgood: Currently the x-over is at 80hz. With my HPF lower than that the speakers distorts way too early. I hope to be able to set it up at 50hz with the JL.

Cheers,

G

honestly 50hz is going to be very hard to do in a j-body. only thing i can suggest is to dampen the hell out of the doors inner and outer skin because if your looking for 50hz, those doors are going to sound like an aluminum can getting crused.
