my box can be ported or selaed as it is the Qlogic box... I am thinking about porting it through my rear deck and playing with that... has anyone done that? how hard is it to do and ensure that I avoid my rear 6x9's? any ideas or information would be helpful? currently, with the sealed box, I run with my back seat down as one amp is mounted to the back of the box and the other to the back of my seat... if I run with the seat up, they start to overheat each other... plus I don't pump the stereo with passengers in the back seat and I rarely eer have anyone back there... anyways, back to topic... any ideas or information would be most appreciated...
if you do it.. just get rid of the rears. (depending on how many ports) I have 2
i did it to mine and it sounds AWESOME
i just went in there with some tin snips and a swasall and made the holes.
then take the rear dash cover and through the trunk, draw cirlcles on the bottome of dash cover for where you will cut it out for the port. then feel free to play with some fibreglass and make it purrdy. or just use the factory carpet as long as you dont demolish it.
i would show you pics but its hard to get the camera in htere as the rear windows are tinted black, and the flash dont do anygood.
well, I enjoy the power and the sound staging I currently have in the vehicle... it will never be set up totally for a show, so I like having the added sound and stuff... is there any way to do it withough losing the rear speakers that anyone knows about?
Hey ..what i did was take and cut a hole through your rear deck...I ran a square port through the metal and up flush with thte rear deckcut it out and folded the fabric over....so i had the 6x9's in the stockish locvation and a big 4x6 hle in the center...get my drift? it sonded pretty good as well..phil
alot of the time with big speakers in the back dash, you get cancellation of bass because the subs compete with the midbass drivers that are most likley not tuned for midbass, they are usually playin full range. thats why i said take em out. but if you like the way it sounds, then hey, its your ride man. you could get an amp and run the 6*9s on high pass and set the crossover at something like 150Hz & up
and make sure that they are boxed underneath, or atleast sheilded from open air. usually a foam cup designed for that size of speaker works great. and then you can chop a hole in the metal part of the rear deck to spec of your box design.
Mine Fire Straight up.
and you will DEFINATLY want to get some Brown Bread or Dynamat. ANY kind of sound dampiner for the metal deck. as it will FART alot with high bass notes, and gets annoying as @!#$ PDQ!
well, I already have the amp that runs my internal speakers set with hp filter along with teh pioneers connected to my deck
how much is brown bread or other dsound dampening materials to do that? It may have to wait until I get some monies first then...
philly, did you have one sub or two? I have two in my box so the ports are out to the side of the top of the box...
here is what mine looked like before the final touches. Now its purdddyeer
cant really see the ports but they are where the stocks are
You will more then likely not listen to this, but I'll try anyway. DO NOT PORT A Q-LOGIC BOX! Those crappy plastic holders with the cardboard tube adapters are absolutly horrible for your system. Not only that but a sealed box != the proper air space required for a ported enclosure. You will end up taking away from your internal space even more with the addition of the ports. And those things arent that big anyways, you will end up suffocating your subs and losing output. leave the sealed box sealed or build a new ported box.
your right sandman he probly wont listen till he cuts it up and ports it and see's what your saying, most people dont listen to advice against what they wanna do.sorta like how he keeps his rear speakers for sound staging and doesnt do shows is his reason for not wanting the removed... i never saw a show car get points for having less speakers and ive never set up or seen an SQ car keep em for sound staging but w/e
On the other hand....you have other fingers.

i had lots of toys when i was young.slinky,etc.but once i found my penis, that was all she wrote
what's funny is that I am not most people... I am asking you guys bc I am not the expert on any of this... I am reasonable enough and logical enough to to follow sandmanx's advice... however 1bad02cav, the reason I like the sound staging is because I don't like the music to be blasted at my face from only front speakers... in my car... when you hear the music, it feels like it is being played right where your head is sitting... that is what I meant by likeing my sound staging... SQ judges like to have the music feel like a concert in your car... whereas I like to be surrounded by my music and like having a little extra power... maybe I am just wierd... perhaps next summer when I have some time, I will build myself a fiberglass custom eclosure in my trunk and have some fun with it... for now though, I thank you all for your advice and will maintain my sealed box setup...
also, Chris D... what type and size subs are those?? and do they sound right facing in like that?
also, I don't do shows bc I took my car through a barbed wire fence about a year and a half ago... and as I am a broke college student, I tried to repair the scratches myself and even though the scratches are covered, some are visible and the paint isn't quite a tone match...
I am thinking about starting to go to some local shows coming up this year once i get back down to school just to see what's up with them and stuff... I doubt I'll win anything, but it will be nice to have it tested and perhaps get it tuned right for both cruisin and for the show... I'll also prolly learn a @!#$ ton about this stuff that I didn't know before...
I don't play with my car for anyone else's amusement...everything I am doing is bc I enjoy it... why is it that y'all assume that a hard hitting stereo must be competition oriented? Like my sig hints at, I just enjoy driving fast and loud music... I start doing that and I just fly... to go out on back country roads and just cruise, and piss off the neighbors... or to tinker with my car or the system or anything else... I am an engineer, I like to build/destroy/change/upgrade/customize just about anything that I can get my hands on...
I don't know why I felt I just had to explain myself to all of you, but there you have it...
Mine are Rockford Fosgats HE2 12" each has Dual 2 ohm coils takes arount 1000 Watts Max
I only hit 142.8 db with them facin backwards. Front firing, i hit 149.6 db. I enjoy the way it sounds.
in a sound quality competitons how pretty your car is doesnt matter as long as u washed it and threw all the md donalds wrappers away.
reason people compare good staging with competiton is because competiton is geared at acheiving the most realistic soundstage. if you ask many people about their best musical experience. they will generally say it was so and so playing live at their local club or stadium etc. most wont say it was while listening to a cd at home or in the car. because most people feel the best way to listen to music is by hearing it loud. this is why competitions based on sq are geared to reproducing the music as realistically as possible. on a quality setup system you will never any be able to tell that there are no rear speakers, you wont even be able to tell that the subs are in the trunk. now on an improperly setup system it will be quite easy to notice a lack of rear speakers, and it wont be accurate just because the speakers are in the front. there is allot more to acheiving realism in the car then where your speakers are placed. most people who want their rear speakers usually have never head of a true quality setup system. thats not dogging on anyone who has rear speakers, its just there arnt allot of really good setup accurate realistic systems out there for them to hear.

Chris D... I know how loud they can get adn how much power they can handle...

I havce the same in my trunk firing backwards... what amp are you using to run them?
thanks for the heads up sndsgood... personally... the best music I've ever heard wasn't at a concert, but I Was in teh grass seats as well... but the best I've heard was in a concert hall... loud, crisp, and all enveloping... it was pretty kick ass... but we'll see... like I said, I have a lot to learn
Rear speakers are not evil, it's how they're used that is evil. A bit of signal processing goes a long way to enhancing the user experience.
One doesn't have to spend hundreds of dollars on DSP (though this is the easiest and probably best route), there are solutions that use a bit of ingenuity and soldering skills, though they're pretty ugly.
GSP (Ghetto Signal Processors)
1. Make sure your amplifier is two-ohm stable and mixed-mono capable. Go to partsexpress.com and buy a 20w eight ohm resistor and a 3.5mH inductor. Wire both in parallel. Then wire your rear speakers in mono (resulting in an eight ohm load). Connect these to the mono terminals on your stereo amp, as described in your owner's manual. Leave your existing front speakers connected to the amplifier in stereo.
The result of this GSP is a mono output with attenuated midrange and treble to the rear speakers for about ten bucks. The only thing missing is a delay and fader capability. If you have any doubt about your amplifier's ability to perform under this condition, do not do this.
2. This second GSP unit requires a four channel amplifier. Two channels for the front, two for the rear. Go to radio shack and buy a pair of 1:1 isolation transformers and a 4-jack bank of RCAs. In the spirit of cheap engineering, hot-glue the components to a piece of scrap MDF or whatever you might have laying around. Wire one transformer's input to one RCA jack. Do the same with another RCA jack. These are your inputs.
Now take the outputs of the transformers and wire them together, but R+ to L- and R- to L+. Then wire this to both remaining RCA Jacks. These are your outputs. Do not connect head unit outputs to the GSP outputs. Bad things will happen to your head unit. Take care to ensure proper connection.
Connect this GSP between the head unit and the rear speaker amplifier. PRESTO! It's like Dolby Surround for under $25, but with alternator whine. (Transformers tend to pick up electromagnetic noise.)

i have a single sub but the box was deep anough to put the port through tha back behind the sub..i wouldnt recfommend doing it like i did thouhg..it took tons of wokrk and in the nd didnt do too much...looked cool though..phil

music in a concert hall is still a live performance

I was speaking about concerts like going to see Poison or BEP or something... not an orchestral performance in a total enclosed space... but thanks for pointing out my apparant lack of communicating effectively...
I know... that is why I retorted... otherwise i couldn't get in on the fun...
