Multiple-driver speakers question
Thursday, July 14, 2005 5:39 PM
I'm reading a book called "Auto Audio" Second Edition, It says that multiple-driver speakers don't sound as good as a single-drive multiple speaker set-up. But I was looking forward to getting four Pioneer MD-speakers for my car because I'm sure you know, space is an issue in a cavy. Now the copyright on this book is 1995 I believe, and I know there have been giant leaps made in the technology used in car audio equipment. So does this still hold true for the MD-speakers or would they be worth getting? Any info on the subject would be greatly appreciated.

Hey wysiwyg: I believe the book is talking about "3-way, 4-way, 5-way" coaxial speakers as opposed to having a set of components where there are seperate drivers for a given frequency range. Not that that doesn't hold true for coaxials but it just sounds like a fancy way of saying components are in most cases superior to coaxial speakers. I could be wrong.... but that is my take on it.

im wondering if its talking about say having two sets of componet speakers up front. multible speakers playing the same thing. if thats the case then the book is accurate.

of course if its saying th diffrence between a 2-way coaxial versus similar priced 4-way coaxial the book is also right, the 2-way will generlly sound better.

Yeah, I'm talking about the 2,3 and 4-way speakers ( the ones with the tweeter, mid and woofer all in the same speaker) compared to a set of component speakers. Sorry I wasn't more clear on that guys. The book also says that running two mono amps (one 4 left & one 4 right speakers) is better then just running one stereo amp for both sides. Is this true?

for the most part it would be for the amps as well. but its all about what u want. the diffrences are going to be pretty minimal maybe not even on a hearing level type diffrences so to some dealing with allot of multible amps, more wiring, more cost just isnt worth it. i like the best i can afford and like to compete in sq and is till wouldnt bother with running an amp on each channel. the cost to me just isnt worth it.
