NEED HELP FAST!!!!!!!!!!!!
Monday, July 11, 2005 6:17 PM
Buddy of mine bought an Alpine IVA-D300 Head Unit. We are trying to hook it up, the DVD Player doesn't work, well it works but the video isn't working. I understand that there are wires that would need to go to the parking brake and the foot brake. Does anyone know which wires these are on this particular model, and if I should just ground them, or run them some other way (without running them to the respective brake wires)

if it helps the head unit is going into a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado, it is a 5-speed manual. We are just trying to bypass the video safety feature. I have searched and have found a part that you can buy, but is there another option and if so how do we do it. Keeping in mind I do not have an owner's manual.

The manual can be downloaded here.

and at the bottom, there is a wiring diagram for the set up.

The Yellow/Black wire is connected to the foot brake, on the + wire.

The Yellow/Blue wire is the parking brake wire, and would be hooked to the Ground side. So you would hook the wire to a ground, to bypass the emerg. brake requirement (not legal in pretty much anywhere, blah blah blah). I have no idea what it uses the foot brake wire for. Then again, I just get info. I don't read about it all lol.

Are you referring to the SPST relay switch they show in the installation? If so, that's only if you have no acc lead going to the radio.

Otherwise, both the connections would need to be made, or I'll try to explain another way to do THAT with switches in a second. Basically, as it says on page 17 in the manual, the purpose of the foot brake, is as a safety check used in conjunction with the parking brake. They use a method of making sure you have your foot on the brake, then engaging the parking brake, and such before it'll let you watch a DVD.

To do it with using switches instead (and this may be what you were asking), you would need 2 switches. One would be a ground switch (for the parking brake lead....run a lead to a ground, from this lead with a switch so when you turn the switch on, the lead sees the grounded connection). The other would be a switch to a 12V+ source for the foot brake lead. The tricky part, would be flipping the switches the right way to turn it on. You would:

1) Turn on the foot brake switch (12V+)
2) Turn on the Parking Brake switch (Ground)
3) Turn off the Parking Brake switch
4) Turn on the Parking Brake switch
5) Turn off the foot brake switch

You would have to do this procedure every time you turn the vehicle on. If you don't turn the ignition off, then you can activate or deactivate the DVD playback with just the Parking Brake switch. But if you turn the ignition off, you'll have to repeat this procedure the next time you want to watch DVD playback when the vehicle is on again.

Hope this helps
