Stock CD Player Issues
Thursday, July 07, 2005 5:43 PM
Hi all

I am having an issue with Burned CD's and my Stock 98 Z24 CD Player. When I play the CD's in anything outside of my cars player it plays fine. But when I play it in the Z24's deck there seems to be static coming from the system. At times the Disc will play with no problems then other times it sounds like I am listening to an AM radio in my Old 73 Pinto. Any Ideas?

Bump. I've been having the same problem on my '97. On certain burnt CD's this happens, and on others it doesnt.

what is the rate the cds are. like what speed doy ou burn at? try slowing it down some. see what happens with that. I found that sometimes when you burn at a high speed weird stuff happens to them.

try using an audio cd
i know this sounds stupid b/c "all cds are the same", but i've had this problem with aftermarket decks before. The problem may be that the burnt cd is too thick for the cd player to read it right. Some cds have a thicker layer of caoting on them so that they last longer. Just go get like a 5 pack of AUDIO cds and try that.

Since I last posted this I have done some research on CD-R's and Audio Systems. MDK hit it on the head when he spoke about the thickness of the CD. However I have also found out that heat effects playback as well. The reason being when the disc heats up then you get "stretching" in the disc platter it's self. I spoke with one of our contacts at IBM (I'm a full time IT repair tech for Duke Energy) and he thinks that when the platter is "stretching" then pits on the disc start of over lap one another. The pits read fine but at the area where they over lap the Laser pickup reads them as "Noise". I tested this and sure enough when the car was warm I would have the issue. But when it was cool, say at night or if I had pulled the disc out of the fridge (When ya have a theory ya gotta test it) it would play fine with no noise. Guess either one I have got to get a mini fridge for the Z24 or plug my NetMD player in to the stock system.

i've never had any trouble with burned cds. high or low quality cds work the same for me.

'97 and '98 were the years in which cd-burners started to become popular. the stock cd players were were probably not made to handle cd-r's at the time.

Peace Out!!!

I have the stock head unit in my 98 Z24 and have burnt many cd's. I have never had any problems. I do believe that with MP-3s you need to burn the CD at a slower speed.
