How do you reset the Theft System. Today my theft system started blinking in the instrument cluster and the car would not start... after about 10 minutes I was able to start the car, I am not sure what causes this to happen. This is the second time in about 3 months that this has happened.
Aftermarket stereo has been installed for over a year
Thanks in advance!
anyone?! I called the local pontiac house and they were like... duh... uh... ummm
do you have the factory alarm on the car
it is an after-market alarm... the THEFT SYSTEM light was blinking on my cluster when I had the key turned to the on/crank position. The car did not have an OEM alarm. Just that theft deterrent system.
wow, nobody knows how to reset the theft system.
when it does that you have to get out of the car and use the factory key fob and lock and unlock 3 times then put the key in the door and lock and unlock again now the light should of gone away if not I cant help you
well thank you for that information, I don't have factory keyless entry though.
Passlock.. not a whole lot of people can call themselves experts on the Passlock system, it's kinda a pain in the arse.
Usually, the blinking theft light means the R-code generated by the key in the cylinder doesn't match the code that's stored in the computer. This can be caused by cheap duplicate keys (Wal-Mart comes to mind.. so does Canadian Tire). I always, always only recommend the dealership for replacement keys. Sometimes you don't have a problem... but when you do, damn it's inconvenient isn't it?
If that's not your issue.. then it's either something to do with the cylinder or the body control module not sending the right fuel password to the PCM, enabling the car to start.
(Please note here folks... 00+ passlock won't start at all... 95-99 passlock will start, then die)
The re-learn procedure is easy... but takes 30 minutes. When it won't start, you turn the key off... wait 5 seconds... then turn the key to ON (not start), wait 10 minutes until the theft light turns off. Repeat three times, after the third time turn it off... wait 5 seconds, then you should be able to start the car.
(I'm about to do the same re-learn procedure on my 2000 convertible right now... since I changed the PCM and BCM.. it needs to relearn it).
You can do the same thing with a Tech 2 diagnostic tool... if you know a friendly dealership. They have to download the R-code from the car... then plug the Tech2 into the Techline terminal... download a new code which gets uploaded to your car.. then it's all set. Takes less time, but most dealerships will charge for that service.
Any questions?

sweet... the steps you mentioned here is about what I do when my car acts up... mainly just wait and keep trying... sometimes turn the ignition to the ON position to watch that damn light blink!!! HAHA.. eventually it starts. Would a loose RPM wire cause the 'theft system' to activate?
Working on computers, the hardest problems to solve are the ones that intermittent... does it one time and not the next or five or six... UGH.
thank you for the insight... seems like I'll have to do the R-code thing.
what causes the car to loose the r-code???
"Sunfire got stolen, all i have is the J to remember it by"
Anything that messes with the ignition system or cluster (95-99 cars) or BCM (00-050 cars).
If you hook up a remote start wrong... if you connect power to a wire that's supposed to get power at a certain time only... computer brain fart... Shouldn't happen, but it does.
