Ok.. So I just looked through the first couple of pages and I didn't find anything really useful, I have a 96 Sunfire with the 2.4 in it right now. My friend has a 00 Sunfire with a 2.4 that is getting swapped with the Eco he had in his 02 sunfire. The motor in my car is starting to act up along with the trans. I know that you have to change over all the wiring from the 00+ into the 95-99, but I also recall hearing something about needing more than that. I have access to the complete 02 that was totaled. Just wondering what else besides wire harness, ecu, and bcm that I need.
And please before saying that it isn't worth it, I am on a very limited budget and I am getting the motor and trans for next to nothing. Pleas any help would be greatly appreciated.
You can just do a direct swap. I'd swap all the sensors from the 96 into the motor you're going to get. Not 100% on the trans but it should be plug and play as well.

I know that for the trans I am going from a Izuzu to a Getrag, and I have seen the swap info threads on that, but I wasn't sure about the engine. Good to know.. should make the swap a lot easier!!!
That'll be cake man. Just swap them both in.

The only difference that will cause you trouble is the knock sensor being a different size. The 00+ uses a smaller sensor so youll need o weld a nut to the back of the block to attach it. Also im not 100% sure but i think you need to wield on a different mount for the trany and also the shifter and cables will be different.

Thanks for the info. I knew about the tranny mount and shifter cable stuff, but I didn't know about the knock sensor. Do you know if there is any way to just use a 00+ sensor with the 96 wiring?
Yeah if you swap the 00+ wiring. That'd just be more work than you need to do. You probably won't have to change out to much on the two motors. Its just going to save you so much work, the clusters are different the way they are ran. The 95-99s use uart data and has no bcm whereas the 00+ use a bcm (which reads serial data, theft sys, trunk release etc..) so you would have to use the 00 cluster and all the wiring, and the 00 pcm. So i would change out a few sensors and swap that in you're 96.

One other question... I may be mistaken, but didn't they remove the EGR on the 00+ models, and if so, what should be done about that?
The differences between the two motors exist. I will tell you what you need.
the 99+ have a different knock sensor (2 wires and smaller)
99+ Different Intake(egr port removed from intake).
PCM
EGR Removed
Injectors
waterjacket.
Different exhaust(sorta)
Compression
Follow these rules only if your keeping all the parts from the 96 beside the engine itself.
1) Knock Sensor - In order for you to fit 96 knock sensor into a 00+ engine you need drill a larger hole and tap it.
2) Intake Manifold - your 96 intake will have a EGR metal port at the bottom of it. you have two options. Get a 99+ intake manifold or cut the metal pipe for the egr return line and go to any local auto parts store and cap it with a vacuum cap.
3)Exhaust Manifold - Use a 99+ Exhaust manifold, this will block the extra EGR port on the exhaust manifold.
4) Now your new 00 engine wont have a EGR on it. There is a simple solution for this. Simply ignore it. What will happen is that you will just have a extra connectors for the egr port that your not going to use. Not having a egr wont make any kind of difference. It will eventually cause a CEL. you can Disable the EGR CEL with HPT.
thats all i can remember of top of my head. You can keep using everything else from the 96. Simple

all the info i have says that to put a 96-98 knock sensor on a 99+ block all you need to do is use a 13/32 drill bit to drill out the hole and a 12x1.25 tap to re- tap it. the older style knock sensor will bolt up to the new block then.
with the 00 engine you can either keep the EGR system, or you can ditch it. if you decide not to use it (as fireshroom stated) you will get a CEL. you can turn it off with HPT, but not everyone has access to it. if you do use it, you need to use the 96 intake mani, 96 exhaust mani, 96 exhaust mani gasket and the EGR stuff (pump, the neck off the head and hose to the intake mani). the 00 head has the provisions for the EGR system, but does not use it. there is an EGR block off plate on the front of the head on the 00 (where the neck would bolt up) and the exhaust manifold gasket and manifold don't have holes in them to make the EGR work. if you dont want the egr, just keep all the 00 stuff.
when using the 96 ecm you need to use the 96 knock sensor and you will also need to use the 96 fuel rail and injectors.
i think thats it?
Thanks so much everybody, I am hopefully going to get it swapped by the end of the summer!!!
