I own a 97 LD9 sunfire, Now i swapped engines in this car before.... im on my third.... hopefully my last (knock on wood)... but to make a long story short i Got the engine decided to put the new water pump on that i got for my birthday on and it jumped time.... Well after about two weeks i finally got the engine in time... and well the starter disengages and it would turn over after about thirty tries.... Now just last wed. it just shut off while i was driving ..... ..... im thinking what the heck.? so i trouble shot it for two days straight.... Replaced the crank positioning, and the rod sensor( the one near the starter and the oil filter.... So i went to turn it over and the go to hell starter still disengages. I'm Like stuck.. Could it be the starter? but that still don't explain the shutting off? it wont even start now???? im confused please help.. Thanks Zcraig

if it turns over check for spark. put a timing light on it and see if it flashes or shoot a LITTLE bit of starting fluid in er and se if she fires.
Just an Aside here, but we used to have a car that got that way was a chevy as a matter of fact not a Cavalier but another one a S10 Blazer. If you sprayed some starter fluid in first, which come to find out later is basically liquid gasoline it would turn right over no questions asked if you didn't it would turn over but it would struggle like crazy. Backfire the whole bit, in fact was kind of funny actually, not long before we got rid of it we actually managed to blow a hole in the muffler when it backfired one time trying to turn over we just kept driving it like that had a really funky sound to it after that haha.
Well here's where i am now.... So yesterday i broke down and bought a new starter.... and it doesn't disengage anymore..... but now here's the problem.... i think its out of time by the way that she sounds.... it turns over like a starter should.... but then wants it starts it will run for like a few seconds then just shut off.... *(when it runs it jumps all around... had my dad look at it and listen... he usually helps but he just had back surgery... he thinks it might be running on 3 cylinders... which if it is would it jump all around? i get out of school today at 12:30 and I'm going to bust into it again.. I'll be checking back and updating frequently.. I really need some help on this one guys and girls.. Thanks..

ld9s r always good for bad icm's and coils due to heat soak so if u have a set thats good for sure might wanna swap it just a thought.
hey guys and girls,
Whats the chances that it jumped time? or that tensioner is not working in the timing chain housing? whats your thoughts... I'll try that ray thanks... i Love my car love the engine just hate the problems... but i guess thats what you get with a LD9 from what i hear and have experensed. let me know your thoughts on this one thanks
