I currentlly have a 2.4 with a rod knock, I have pulled the engine, I would love to drop something more powerfull under the hood, but after reading some of the swaps it sound like it would take 40-50 hrs of work and $2-3 Grand to do the swap. The main problem is that I have noticed a lot of the 97-99 motors have a very good potental for rod knocks, and it is hard to find a used motor with less than 120K miles on it... rebuilding it cost around $1200-1500.
I have found several 2000-2002 motors used and good shape, but I have heard you can not swap with those motors...?? Although I know that is BS it just a matter of what I need to swap to make it work.right.. oviously I need to swap computers, but what else? I can't imagine it being a whole lot more than that, are the mounts different? or the Transmissions different mounts? I don't mind swaping Transmissions if that is the case, currentlly I have the 5-Speed Manual. Does anyone done this kind of swap and what it takes??
Incorrect. Theres very few differences with the 2.4 motor from the 96-99 and 00-02 models. Off the top of my head, the 00-02 has no EGR. And the knock sensor is different. I think the 00-02 is a 2wire. Other than that, you can use it. Mounts are the same. Your transmission will work. You dont need to swap PCMs. You couldnt even if you wanted to.
If you get a 00-02 motor, your going to have to do a EGR delete, which is no big deal. And deal with the knock sensor. Thats it. Everything else will bolt up and work as far as Im concerned.
ive done a few of these swaps and for what i have found (not the easy way) 96-99 have one type of trany mounts for a manual and the 00+ are about 3 inches wider. Im not sure if this applies to auto's.
Ok, let me set this straight...
Transmission doesnt matter since he is only swapping the motor. If you get a 99+ motor, you will NOT have to do an EGR delete. You will use your 98 intake, exhaust manifold and EGR and it will function properly. As for the Knock sensor, simply splice the wiring for the knock in your harness to the trigger wire from the 99+ motor and ground off the other one. Done like dinner...
